Intellectual Freedom: Is it ‘Ruining’ the Children of Today People are capable of thought. How easily a thought can be shaped and guided to new ideas and beliefs is a scary concept for many people. Violence is in the world. People die everyday, and it is just a part of life. There are also many people in the world. Most of these people have different beliefs, and they have the desire to present these beliefs in the form of media. All religious people, Christians, Buddhists, Atheists, Satanists, and all other religions should be allowed to present what they believe. We saw a few examples of why a book may be banned, but there are many reasons for people who fancy books being banned. Personally, I don’t see any reason for any book to be banned; this excludes obvious examples, such as pornography both visual and written out. As long as there is some sort of educational value the writing piece should not be banned. The topic of book banning is so controversial because of the perspective people have on life. An author wrote this about A Wrinkle in Time, “It combined science and Christianity in an ingenious and entertaining way. The two are so often seen as polar opposites, but she showed just how similar they both can be. Family, loyalty, love, courage, and a quest for knowledge- these are virtuous things that everyone should aspire to” (Baldassarro). This is similar to the perspective I have on the book. It was ingenious, adventurous, and overall fun to read. Many people share this idea, but there are others who say this book is satanic, and should be banned. With these two conflicting opinions it would be impossible to pass a law that would please everyone. Although if the child desires the opportunity to read the book, or to read any book at all, should they be deprived of the chance to read the book? This means any book that can be read. Including books with religious affiliation and books that may challenge the social norm. For without new ideas how can society press on and move
