In 2016, Quarter back Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers decided to take a knee while the national anthem was being played as an act of protesting against the discrimination and killings of unarmed African Americans by the police. The act of kneeling which left Kaepernick unemployed was later performed by numerous NFL players as a respectful protest. However, there was a backlash against this protest. People began criticizing the act by condemning it to be a sign of disrespect to the national anthem and the flag of the United States. In contrast with the play “Inherit the wind” that covers a story of a school teacher named Bertram Cates that was imprisoned after he contravened the Butler act that prohibited teachers from teaching evolution …show more content…

In the NFL, the kneeling era became more bitter when President Donald Trump got involved and tweeted claiming that “Kaepernick speaks to problem in US. He is a son of a bitch, I speak to problems in US and those fine people elect me president” (Trump), this enraged the league as a whole and the level of protest bounced up inexplicably. Owners, Coaches, cheerleaders all joined the protest and the foundation became stronger. Kaepernick’s mom later on responded to president trump claiming that “Guess that makes me a proud bitch!” (Garber), the comments changed the mentality of NFL fans, those who were quick to negatively condemn the protest were changed and understood that it carried a message, people started respecting the protest and they united themselves with players to spread the message. After the kneeling era became unforgettable Kaepernick won numerous awards because of his actions, he was named citizen of the year by the Gentlemen’s quarterly magazine, Eason Monroe courageous advocate award, 2017 sports illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, and he was also on Time Magazine’s shortlist for person of the
