Have you ever watched a movie, or heard a song, or observed a piece of artwork that simply changed the way you perceive things? The subject matter captured your attention and has stuck with you for as long as you can remember. For me, the game changer would have to be the Harry Potter series. Although I am currently reading the books, the movies opened up my appreciation for the wizarding world.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, Harry Potter was written by J.K. Rowling and is about a young boy who discovers that he is a wizard and yearns to learn about his magical life. His mother and father, Lily and James Potter, were also magical. The storyline speaks volumes to me because the three sole characteristics are some of the most valuable in life. Love: whether one refers to being loved, or loving, the feeling is irreplaceable. Our family and friends are often the ones whom we have the most affection for. Despite Harry’s parents’ departure from the world, they maintained a consistent presence in guarding his life. Sirius, although not known long by Harry, was one of his few trusted confidantes, along with Professor Dumbledore and gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid. In life, I believe we all have relationships we refer to as friendships where the trust and respect is mutual. Our companions are the ones who share our life experiences and help us pull through the bad times and celebrate the good times. Harry Potter succeeded only with the help of his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, and their everlasting support for him. What is the first thing that you think of when you hear the name Harry Houdini? Personally, I think of an amazing magician. What most people don’t know is that he was also the first pilot to fly a plane in Australia and a famous movie star who was recognized around the world. To most people Houdini would seem suicidal from the stunts he pulled, but that is what made his acts extraordinary.
But this was not the sole thing which added to his uneasiness. He did not find an appropriate dancing partner for the Christmas party. Harry wanted to have a romantic story with Cho Chang, but he fell into the clutches of Voldemort by degrees. The part of this book, which appeals to me most is not the emotions of these youngsters. Actually they were childish from my perspective. The emotions the Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort had are more compelling for me to look into. Why was Bartemius Crouch Jr. so obedient to Voldemort? Why did Voldemort kill his father and grandparents? “Both of us, for instance, had very disappointing fathers...very disappointing indeed. Both of us suffered the indignity, Harry, of being named after those fathers. The most prominent feature of Prince Harry in the two Henry1V plays is his absolute isolation. When we first see Harry, he is a pariah and outlaw among his own people, the nobility, and a source of fear and misery for his family. He has no friends in any real sense, just pawns; unlike Hotspur, Mortimer, and even Falstaff, he has no lovers and shows no interest in sexual love. He stands alone in the world, and he stands against all the world. He is motivated only by suspicion, cruelty, pride, and greed for power. People are real to Harry only in so far as he can use them; and, ultimately, the future King can use people only when they are destroyed. His every step is toward death and destruction: the two plays begin with Harry's plot against his tavern friends, which culminates in the sacrificial expulsion of Falstaff, and end with rumours of war, the campaign against France, carried out for reasons of internal political advantage. Harry is what today is commonly described as a psychopath, and the plays demonstrate how such a man can become a successful king and defeat the world, a perfect blend of Machiavel (the immoral villain) and Machiavellian (the amoral strategist).
Dr. Seuss once wrote that “today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you”, but what makes a person unique? A person’s character is what makes them who they are. It is the foundation of personality, words, and actions, and it grows with every trial in an individual’s life. Personal struggle develops character because it brings to light what a person will and will not do, allows them to find or develop talents, it creates an opportunity to alter their mindset, and the experience gained will stay with the individual forever.
Just to quickly run through the two previous books; Harry Potter is a wizard, who’s parents were killed by the worst dark wizard ever known. The reason why Harry Potter is still around, is because Lord Voldemort failed to kill Harry. His spell hit Harry, but then backfired on Voldemort taking all of his powers with him. Harry is so famous for two things. Withstanding the powers of Lord Voldemort, and, taking him back in to the underworld in hiding. In the first book, Harry receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He’s eventually allowed to go, and spends the next six months there learning magic, getting into trouble, and trying to solve mysteries of his past, and the school. In the second book, Harry goes back to his second year at Hogwarts, and gets into more trouble, figures out many astonishing mysteries and learns loads more magic. His best friends in the two books consist of Ron and Hermione (two of his fellow wizard students) and Hagrid the gamekeeper who was expelled from Hogwarts but allowed a job as the gamekeeper.
It lets children and young adults go into a fantasy world that involves around wizards, witches, and magic. This series gets children to start to read at a young age. I believe this series is deeply more because it can show what morally side path you want to go down life. This series of books show how the morally good people would act in a crisis and not in crisis. For example, Mrs. Weasley in books and movies series her character was the loving mother who loved everyone basically. But at the end of the books and movies, when she in a crisis situation with Bellatrix Lestrange, who is trying to kill her daughter. Mrs. Weasley puts down that friendly loving look and goes after Bellatrix. They battled until Bellatrix’s death. It was the first time we saw this character not in loving, happily mood. Her morals changed when she saw that her daughter was in danger. This series also teaches us how to break the rules. Even though breaking the rules is morally wrong, but in some cases breaking the rules is good for people. Its shows how even fictional characters are not perfect in a make-up world. But it does show heroic and virtuous character moments that don’t need a perfect character. This imagination by J.K. Rowling is truly impressive because she appeals to our heads and our hearts with her writing according to Philosopher Martha Nussbaum. She means that the way she wrote some of her characters and the scenes they are in they touches our self in different place like our head and hearts. This book also gives young children and adults to explore their imagination that could lead us to the next Harry Potter
Since the first segment of the series was released in 1997, Harry Potter has been challenged by churches and parents due to the practicing of magic by children found within the books. The books have been removed from school shelves, discouraged by churches, and censored by parents. It is claimed that Harry Potter is devilish, satanic, and encourages children to practice the occult, damaging their religious views (LaFond). Therefore, many parents keep their children from reading the book series. Yet, Harry Potter has been such a positive influence on my so many lives. The Harry Potter series has impacted my life directly; it was the reason I developed my passion for reading, and it opened my eyes to the real world with regard to adults and telling the truth. It also influenced me indirectly; by making me aware of the importance of a solid reputation. My hope is that everyone has something that changed them in the way that Harry Potter has changed my life, and helped turn me into the young man I am today.
Ever since J.K. Rowling first introduced Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1997, children and adults have read and loved the series. It has gained such popularity that all of the books have been made into major motion pictures, and a Harry Potter attraction has been opened in Universal Studios, Florida. Though the readers love Rowling’s intricate and exciting story lines, many controversies have arisen from these stories, not only in the United States, but also in various countries around the world. Perhaps the biggest controversy is the religious implications perceived by some critics. Although these critics believe that the series promotes paganism and encourages evil actions, these theories should not be taken so seriously.
The book that I read and the movie that I watched is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It is classified as a mystery/fantasy genre for both the movie and the book. Love is one of the hardest and strongest kinds of magic and is perhaps the fabric that holds the wizarding world of Harry Potter together. Dumbledore says to Harry “Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love” (Harry Potter and the Deathly Halllows 722). The series stresses that it is important to love. It is obvious throughout the series that Harry embraces his history and duty by accepting the soul-purifying act of practicing self-sacrificial love. It is no surprise that the Harry Potter series is so widely in a time of fear, uncertainty, and unrest. Harry defeats evil not by fearing it, but by embracing it and overcoming it with love.
In this domestic conflict, Harry fights Uncle Vernon to see the letters, which may provide some answers as to the identity of his parents. This is the initial quest for Harry’s self-identity, which reveals the potential for self-realization as a wizard. This aspect of the “real world” certainly defines a motive for “escapism” for Harry, as he seeks to find his true self, but his identity is far more complex than what the real has to offer him. In this manner, Rowling then creates the “fantasy world” of Hogwarts’s School to achieve the goal of self-realization in Harry’s quest for a true identity.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was written by J. K. Rowling and is the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series. The book is about a seventeen-year-old wizard, named Harry Potter, who has to travel all over England to find things that will help him defeat the evil wizard, Lord Voldomort. The main theme/moral of the entire series is good will always triumphs over evil. In every book, even when it looks like evil is going to win, good always triumphs in the end.
Harry Potter begins his life as a loner because his relatives did not want to acknowledge him. At Hogwarts, he meets three people who become his good friends. Each has a strength and with that a weakness. Ron needs Harry to help him realize that he can be great and live up to his many brothers. Hermione helps Harry through all his schoolwork and during danger. In return, Harry helps Hermione loosen up and acknowledge what true friendship is. Neville gets courage from his friends. Together, they overcome the weakness and help each other through all the conflicts that come their way.
In the novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, J.K Rowling introduces her main character, a 11-year old British wizarding student, Harry Potter. Harry is described to have jet-black hair, green eyes, and to be pale, skinny, and bespectacled. While Harry was still and infant, he was responsible for the downfall of a dark and powerful wizard, as a result his name is known to everyone wizarding world. In the novel, despite all the fame and admiration he has, Harry only recently finds out he is a wizard, and that he is famous. Therefore Harry feels burdened and insecure with all the attention he is receiving, and at the end of the novel, he proves himself to be an incredible wizard. Throughout the novel we learn Harry is brave, curious and modest.
