Classroom activities and off-task behavior in elementary school children
One of the most difficult situations that teachers find themselves is ensuring that students pay maximum attention during classes. According to researchers, maintaining focus is one of the important aspects of successful learning. Researchers say that environment plays a huge role in the way kids pay attention while in class. There is a strong link between kids’ cognitive skills and the attention they pay during classrooms. Off-task behaviors also contribute hugely to this problem of losing attention during class time. Observers argue that they end up having negative impact on kids’ learning( Rainwater & Rainwater, 2008).
Researchers are finding it hard to find ways of overcoming off-task behaviors among students and teachers during class times. The reason behind this is that they fail to come up with sufficient evidence that cause the off-task behaviors among students. According to the authors of this article, there are various factors that lead to off-task behaviors among students. However, these factors tend to vary from one region to another. They include; weather conditions such as snow, rain, sudden interruptions for example announcements and students’ physical and psychological conditions. According to researchers, students use around 10 per cent and 50 per cent of their instructional time in off-task behavior. It is difficult to ascertain the exact amount of time students’ use in off-task behavior as limited research has been done on the issue. Skinner developed the concept of positive reinforcement which showed how placing a hungry rat in a box. The rat learned to pull the lever so food would be knocked down. Therefore receiving food would prompt them to repeat the action of knocking over the lever. Positive reinforcement strengthens a behavior by providing a consequence an individual finds rewarding. Untreated cases of attention disorders can be spotted through certain symptoms. These symptoms include short attention span, daydreaming, low frustration tolerance, poor planning ability, disorganization, constantly displaying inappropriate behavior, and a multitude of others (Copeland & Love, 1992). If a teacher encounters a student in their classroom and feel that he or she may have an attention disorder, there are certain steps one should follow to initiate effective and appropriate treatment of the student. First, one should take time to organize a list of behaviors and problems of the student that cause concern. Next one should gather information about the student?s behavior by observing them. Students will display inappropriate behaviors for many different reasons. In this case study, we are only given a snap shot of the behaviors, as well as, probable functions of the behavior. Sven engages in maladaptive behavior when he is expected to be attending to tasks. There could be several reasons for his maladaptive behaviors, including, but not limited to sensory disorder, feeling of not being in control of tasks, task demand too high or attention seeking. Regardless, it seems as though Sven wanted to escape or avoid the behavior, completing the assignment. The behavior principal that Sven’s case illustrates is antecedent control, or changing the task or environment in order to produce desired behavior (Alberto & Troutman, 2013). The observer noticed that Sven reacted negatively when presented with assignments or tasks; therefore, changing the antecedent from giving Sven a specific assignment or task, to letting him choose between eight task options that would yield the same instructional objective, which decreased his maladaptive behaviors and increasing acceptable behaviors (engaging in academic tasks).
13. Preventing Boredom and filling “free” time: To prevent students from becoming sidetracked and bored, I know it is important to have a continuous flow of activities. To ensure this, I plan all of my lessons with extra activities for unexpected “free” time. These efforts will help ensure that class time is used wisely for furthering education. I feel that the busier I keep my students the less likely they will have time for inappropriate behavior.
When formulating a plan, it is important to remember that students do not exist in a vacuum. The class in which the observations took place was a Year One and Two class with twenty six pupils in the class. Adults within the class were the Teacher, one Teaching Assistant with the occasional help of a Special Needs Assistant. Confidentiality is important within the classroom setting therefore to respect the individuals own confidentiality they will be known as Child J throughout this assignment. Child J is a male aged five years and three months. It was decided that the observations of the individual would be about concentration, as the Teacher was concerned that J does not have the ability to concentrate for more than five minutes at a time.
