Importance Of Redemption In Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner

Redemption is an act where people try to better themselves by doing things to make up for their guilt. People make many decisions that they later on regret in their lifetime and try to redeem themselves by acts of kindness. In the novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini uses Amir’s self redemption for the readers to learn that redemption is essential when a person has done something they are not proud of. It teaches us to let go of situations that we no longer have control over. Hosseini shines the light on Amir’s guilt of killing his mother after she gave birth to him and watching his friend, Hassan, getting raped. When Amir comes to Afghanistan to visit Rahim. He reveals the secret that’s been hidden from Amir his whole lifetime. “He and Sanaubar had Hassan, didn’t they? They had Hassan- ‘No they didn’t’, Rahim Khan said. ‘Yes they did!’ ‘No they didn’t Amir.’ ‘Then who-’ ‘I think you know who”(Hosseini 222). Amir is stunned with the news that Hassan is actually his brother. He is mortified and is extremely hurt that nobody told him about this during his childhood. Then Rahim proposes to Amir the way that he can be good again and he begins to tell Amir about Sohrab, Hassan’s son who is now an orphan. This leads Amir to his next act of redemption. During the climax of the book Amir shows his redemption by fighting Assef, Hassan’s rapist. “WHAT’S SO FUNNY?’ Assef bellowed. Another rib snapped, and this time lower left. What was so funny was that, for the first time since winter of 1975, I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some hidden nook in a corner of my mind, I’d been looking forward to this” “But I felt healed. Healed at last. I laughed” (Hosseini 289). Amir is back in his hometown finding a way to be good again and he ends up meeting Assef again. This time they are fighting because Amir wants the boy Sohrab. Amir was so worried with proving himself worthy to his father that it only ended up leading him to hurt himself. He takes the worst beating he’s ever received and has been so afraid of to find out that, that is what he needed to put himself at ease. Amir takes in Hassan’s son to give him a better life and to make up for what he’s done to Hassan in the past to redeem himself. Redemption is important because this is the only way for a person to forgive themselves for the unresolved guilt they have. Many people have unresolved guilt that makes them very unhappy and haunts them all their lives. In order for the people to be at peace again they find ways to make up for the guilt they have.
