Hundreds of chemicals are used during Marcellus Shale drilling; therefore, the process can cause contamination and pollution. According to Marc Levy and Mary Esch, because the Marcellus Shale drills go so far under the ground, the water there has a higher chance of being polluted. According to the article “Methane Gas and Its Removal from Wells in Pennsylvania” methane is a chemical that can contaminate drinking water because of drilling. Too much methane can be harmful to humans (Swistock and Rizzo). According to the article “Hydrofracking,” water sources also have an increased risk of being polluted when a drill is installed near them.
It is formed by crude oil that has migrated toward the Earth's surface and has been stripped of its lighter fractions by descending water. • The components of Petroleum: (A) hydrocarbons. I will spend a lot of time on this segment, as it allows a lot of discussion about hydrocarbons, in which I can discuss chemical compounds and molecular structures and subsequent properties. Can discuss paraffins, naphthenes, aromatics in detail. (B) Non-hydrocarbons.
These chemicals are toxic to both humans and animals alike. In the quest to find oil through seismic imaging, sonar transmission waves are emitted which can be damaging to various aquatic animals. Water can also become polluted through oil spills which has recently been seen. In events such as the BP oil spill, individuals are able to see the true effects of what happens when technology fails. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by BP made a huge impact on the oil industry, and raised a greater awareness about ... ... middle of paper ... ...ding to the Technical Advancements of Multi-Lateral group, a multilateral well has one or more laterals attached to a central, vertical well.
Extracting, transporting, and burning fossil fuels are dangerous. There are also many negative biological and environmental impacts that result from the use of fossil fuels, such as ocean acidification, groundwater contamination, land subsidence, oil spills, and global warming. Therefore, we should be trying to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and explore alternative energy sources such as wind energy, hydroelectricity, and solar energy instead. Our world depends on fossil fuels, but they can also hurt us. Fossil fuels are both a blessing and a curse.
Oil plays a immense and vital role in our society as it is organized today. Oil represents much more than just one of the main energy sources used by mankind. The oil and petroleum industry plays an extremely important role in the economy and politics of our country. Petroleum products, besides being an important energy source, serve as feedstock for several consumer goods, which in turn plays a growing and relevant role in people’s lives. But apart from all pertinent role the oil industry plays in our society, it holds a major potential hazards for the environment, and may impact it at different levels: air, water, soil, and consequently all living beings on our planet.
According to the Environmental Studies Capstone, shale is a type of rock that contains fossil fuels. These fossil fuels can be an alternative energy source. Shale rock is located under the aquifer that contains drinking water, and therefore, the drills have to go through this aquifer. Marcellus Shale drilling is a process that uses a combination of water, sand, and chemicals to break the shale and retrieve the gas that it contains (Environmental). Marcellus Shale drilling is a hazard because it uses hundreds of dangerous chemicals in its process, it can lead to pollution and contamination, and it has few regulations applied to it; although, a solution to the major issues of this drilling is to create and enforce more regulations.
Offshore oil drilling refers to a mechanical process in which a wellbore is drilled through the seabed in search for petroleum that lies in rock formations. In 1891, the first oil wells were submerged in the Grand Lake St. Marys in Ohio. Since that day they have expanded their range of oil drilling, and our ecosystems are now paying the price for it. I think that offshore oil drilling should be banned because it is ruining the environment, hurting marine wildlife, and even has a negative affect on us humans. The first reason why offshore drilling should be stopped is because of how harmful it is to the environment.
INTRODUCTION Crude oil and natural gas have become the leading natural resources of our generation. This is because of the increase in the demand of its byproducts such as petroleum products (Gasoline, diesel etc) and natural gas (e.g. propane gas) used in heating homes. This increase in demand for oil products has made the petroleum industry very successful and many professionals have directed their expertise towards its location, extraction, purification and sale. Petroleum products and natural gas are used on a day to day basis and most people are aware of the fact that these are byproducts of crude oil but not many know the origin of crude oil.
Crude oil is obtained through oil drilling, where a hole is drilled into a point on the Earth and oil is pumped out, in some cases natural gas is also obtained during the process. Oil drilling can be performed either on land through an oil well with a well-known ‘pump jack mechanism’, or offshore on an oil platform or commonly referred to as an oil rig. Properties- Crude oil or petroleum is a mixture of a very large number of different hydrocarbons. Crude oil can also contain impurities; these can include traces of elements such as nickel, iron, nitrogen and oxygen. There are many different forms of crude oil and this is why it does not have a definitive chemical formula.
Upstream is alluded to as 'Investigation and Production' part where raw petroleum is recuperated and handled. As it were, boring of wells and recouping the natural oil to the surface is termed as upstream. Downstream includes refinement of unrefined petroleum, offering and circulation of items, for example, gas, plane fuel, petroleum coke, black-top and considerably more. The downstream segment takes care of the requests of the buyers through plastics, manures, manufactured elastic and so forth. Furthermore refineries go about as the fundamental change point for all raw petroleum into its different consumable items and are primarily found locally.
