My journey into medicine was an unconventional, at best; it started with an open mind, no expectations and a desire to leave the country for a day. I entered college with the aspirations of pursuing a career in education. In my junior year, a close friend asked me if I was free one weekend to accompany her and the UCSD Flying Samaritans to Ensenada, Mexico to volunteer at a free clinic. I agreed and saw it as an opportunity to experience something new and different. I never expected that trip to open my eyes to the world of health care. I was able to be a part of a team of doctors and volunteers working together to provide underprivileged families access to basic healthcare, something we often take for granted. The impact that day had on my life was nothing short of exhilarating and inspirational. It was the fuel that lit my desire for medicine. Prior to applying to medical school, I worked as an EMT, where I not only learned to perform emergency life-saving procedures but most of all it gave me compassion. To do all that I can build a trusting relationship. I have learned that a good patient-physician relationship is the corner stone of a Family Medicine physician. It is one of the only fields, where by virtue I can see patients through the entirety of their lives and be truly proactive to maintain their health. Therefore, I can take the time to thoroughly explore all aspects of my patient’s health. I can incorporate all aspects, ranging from physical, cardiovascular, gastroenterological, and psychiatric medicine in order to maintain a patient’s particular balance. I truly believe that medicine is not just about treating a lab value, symptom or illness, but most importantly it is about the human connection with patients.
