One of the most under appreciated aspects in filmmaking is editing. Editing is the invisible art of film and without editing there would be no story. The writer, director, and editor use the five W’s in film to create the story. Who is the character, what is his goal, when is this taking place, where is it taking place, and why is this happening. All these things come to together for one purpose and that is to tell a story that is relatable to an audience. One mistake can lead to the audience not believing that the events that are happening could actually happen. By keeping continuity in your film you are letting your viewers become apart of your film. If a hand is touching someone’s head in one shot and in the next shot that hand is somehow holding a cat then that pulls your audience out of the story. You have to let your audience see how that hand went from touching a persons head to holding a cat if not it makes viewer feel jumbled and lost. A films soundtrack can add to a movie by enhancing the world of the characters by making you feel emotions for the characters. The problem with ADR is you have to recreate sounds as well as the dialogue and this is called foley. Voiceovers can help cover up mistakes in sounds and give information to the audience over images to help save time in the film. With the release of Star Wars: Episode I the Phantom Menace, in March of 1999, digital film technology officially filtered itself in to main-stream Hollywood. Digital film technology is the latest and probably most revolutionizing new technology to hit Hollywood. The use of digital film allows for infinite editing capabilities and endless benefits to distribution and special effects. The use of digital film allows for producers to add in extras, produce stunts, and even create false people with the click of a mouse. Time and cost consuming stunts, stunt doubles, and actors may no longer be a worthy concern to producers and their budgets. Though the growing popularity of digital film technology gradually replaces these actors and on-screen jobs, this new technology is actually creating more jobs than it destroys.
My grandfather has always talked about how much movies have changed in such a short amount of time. His favorite movie, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, is an example of how editing and special effects have changed drastically since only 1982 and even from the early 1900s. Watching a movie from this year compared to a movie from the 1930s, the viewer would notice many differences ranging from effects, transitions and especially quality. When film started in the late 1800s, there was no digital technology to edit films. There have been many contributors in the film industry that have helped evolve film to its digital age of today. Edwin Porter was the first person in film history to create a narrative film. Lev Kuleshov created a technique gives films certain moods to it and can affect a person’s emotions just by the way images are juxtaposed and edited together. Danny Boyle is an example of a modern day director that developed a set of guidelines that a director should reciprocate while filming. Film editing has revolutionized and developed so much since the early 1900s to now because of important contributors throughout its history that developed new technology and techniques.

A camera and good director or cinematographer is needed to make that possible. Different directors and cinematographers will use different camera techniques to make you focus on what you see. Some are the producers are responsible for raising the funds for the movie while others are responsible for the production that goes on during the filming of the movie and still other producers are in charge of what physically goes on the set. The idea of writing, “what you know” is not always true and writing, “what you come to know” is in fact a more accurate way to write. Narrative elements are used as a bridge by the directors in their film to create any master plot that is currently known. Any modification at any narrative element used by the director at important moments inside the story can help you portray a different master plot. This used of narrative elements can be best described as an ever changing process that takes place inside an individual’s head. Depending on the individual that may be exposed to those narrative elements can create different meanings. This new interpretation can be different for everyone. We have to be aware that one change in the surface scenery can lead to many ideal outcomes in our minds and that is the main power the audience has.

Their task is to create a finished motion picture through combining and selecting shots and putting them into a coherent sequence of events.
