One of the most under appreciated aspects in filmmaking is editing. Editing is the invisible art of film and without editing there would be no story. The writer, director, and editor use the five W’s in film to create the story. Who is the character, what is his goal, when is this taking place, where is it taking place, and why is this happening. All these things come to together for one purpose and that is to tell a story that is relatable to an audience. Everything that goes into a film has a purpose and everything you see onscreen has a motivation. Each shot is carefully selected to give the audience an idea of what is going on. One mistake can lead to the audience not believing that the events that are happening could actually happen. By keeping continuity in your film you are letting your viewers become apart of your film. If a hand is touching someone’s head in one shot and in the next shot that hand is somehow holding a cat then that pulls your audience out of the story. You have to let your audience see how that hand went from touching a persons head to holding a cat if not it makes viewer feel jumbled and lost. A films soundtrack can add to a movie by enhancing the world of the characters by making you feel emotions for the characters. Music can inspire you and inspire the characters to overcome their conflict and reach their goals. The production mixer is crucial to making the sounds of the world and bringing to life the world of the characters. The problem with ADR is you have to recreate sounds as well as the dialogue and this is called foley. Voiceovers can help cover up mistakes in sounds and give information to the audience over images to help save time in the film. Sound effects can enhance a film by making the sounds believable and adding intensity to a scene. The person who is in charge of sound effects is the sound effects editor.
