When it comes to the field of social work, engaging is one of the many important tools it takes to be successful in the social work field. When I say successful I am not talking about getting the job done and moving onto the next client or making a lot of money. Actually, in order for engagement to be successful it’s important to leave money and the thought of “I’m just listening to the client to get my job done” Effective engagement is effective when active listening takes place as well because sometimes people (myself included) can listen to a person talk for hours but not really hear them. It can be hard for some addicts to even admit they have a problem, but these same clients also have devious and manipulative personality traits and a lot of them are still using them to their advantage especially when it comes to a certain staff member at my agency. The staff member I am talking about is sweet, kind, and has a big heart. This staff member would give a person the shirt off her back and the clients use that to their advantage every chance they get and I don’t believe it’s helping their sobriety at all because it’s just showing them that they tricks they used on the outside can be the same tricks they use in treatment. During my ten weeks at my agency, I have noticed the clients at my agency don’t care for the staff members who they can’t push around. My supervisor’s wife has a tough love approach because she has been down the same road the addicts are on now and she understand and knows that her parent’s treating her like a princess is what enabled to be addicted for so long and sadly I feel like that is what this kind-hearted staff member is doing. That situation made me sad because those clients got away with hurting a person who has been nothing but kind to them ever since they stepped foot into that facility. The client I did my bio psych interview on teachers at the treatment facility and the clients don’t care for her and have even tried to get her into trouble because she is what one of my friends call “straight up, no chaser” and apparently the clients aren’t ready to accept that type of approach but I believe my supervisor’s wife and the client I did my bio psych interview on is what is going to pay off for these client’s in the long run. The kind hearted staff member engagement hasn’t been effective because they know they can manipulate her and manipulation is one of the main things I was warned about before I started at Shepherd’s Shelter. The staff members told me that the clients would try to use my good looks against me and tell me things like “Pastor takes our food stamp cards uses them to purchase snacks for the snack
