Introduction
For as long as anyone can remember, people have always been trying to explain the unknown. In the scientific world, psychologists study concepts in hopes to illuminate them and educate the masses. Many psychological theories have been heavily debated over time, including that of the development of intelligence. Intelligence is a hot topic first due to the fact that it has not always been a defined concept. Different theories regarding what intelligence truly is have come and gone however a major argument surrounding intelligence is what factors play the largest role in the development of intelligence. Who doesn’t wish to know if smart people are born that way or if hard working and studying is the reason for their success? Important topics, such as what attributes most to the development of intelligence in humans is personally fascinating. It is also crucial to determine how intelligence is developed in order to understand why intelligence levels may vary from person to person. In response to this ongoing debate, the research question, to what extent do genetic and environmental factors influence levels of intelligence? was composed. Either side can be argued, for it is common to wish to see a clear answer. It can be argued that both genetic and environmental factors impact intelligence levels, however ultimately the external, environmental factors play a larger role in the development of intelligence levels. The renowned intelligence quotient, or IQ was created by William Stern. This incorporates a person’s mental age and their actual age to discover where they fall intellectually compared to other people (Myers, 2007, p.444). When measuring intelligence, according to Myers (2007), it is important to realize that “Today’s intelligence tests therefore produce a mental ability score based on the test-taker’s performance relative to the average performance of others the same age” (p. 444). Many people question how credible intelligence tests are since intelligence itself could mean several different things to a person. Perhaps to compensate for this, numerous ability tests are in place at schools and workplaces. The Bell Curve is a book originally published in 1994. It was written by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray to explain the variations of intelligence in American Society. They accomplished this by using statistical analysis, for the purpose of raising warnings regarding the consequences of the intelligence gap. This was also made to propose a national social policy with the goal of mitigating bad consequences that have been attributed to this intelligence gap. Much of the information is widely considered controversial. An example of this is the low African-American scores compared to whites and Asians, and genetic factors in intelligence abilities. The introduction of the book starts with a brief history of intelligence theory and recent developments in intelligence thought and testing. The author creates six assumptions that has to do with the validity of the “classical” cognitive testing techniques.

The nature vs. nurture controversy has been one of the oldest and most incessant debates throughout history. The disputation of this debate has generated numerous hypotheses, and explorations by various researchers, however, it has not been clearly determined as to whether a person is biologically determined or whether they are shaped by the environment. Nature’s theory holds that a person’s mental ability is sustained by what he or she is born with genetically. Conversely, the argument that a person’s environment plays a large role in his or her mental aptitude is nurture. Despite the numerous and overwhelming experiments that have been fulfilled by theorists who support the nature theory, I strongly believe that the environment around a person, on the other hand, is ever-changing and offers more opportunities for growth and variation.

Many scientist and psychologist have made numerous attempts to come up with an explanation for the development of human intelligence. For many years, there has been much controversy over what intelligence is and whether it is hereditary or nurtured by the environment. Webster's dictionary defines intelligence as "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge; which includes a sensing an environment and reaching conclusions about the state of that environment [7]. In this world, there are many different individuals who are not only different in demographics but also different neurologically. This paper aims to examine a particular assessment tool, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales (Fifth Edition), which measures both intelligence and cognitive abilities (Roid, 2003). This assessment is usually administered by psychologists and the scores are most often used to determine placement in academics and services allotted to children and adolescents (despite their compatibility for adults) (Wilson & Gilmore, 2012). The true nature of intelligence has been debated more intensely then ever over the last century. As the science of psychology has developed one of the biggest questions it had to answer concerned the nature of Intelligence. Some of the definitions that have been given for intelligence have been the ability to adjust to one’s environment. Of course by such a definition even a person who is generally considered to be dull can be regarded as being intelligent if he can take care of himself. Other definition is such as having the tendency to analyze things around yourself. However it can be argued that such behavior can lead to over-analyzing things and not reacting to one’s environment and dealing with it in an intelligent manner.
On the ‘nature’ side of the debate is the psychometric approach, considered to be the most dominant in the study of intelligence, which “inspired the most research and attracted the most attention” (Neisser et al. 1996, p. 77). It argues that there is one general (‘g’) factor which accounts for intelligence. This is an essay about the different theories of intelligence; it will discuss which theory is best at determining intelligence in my opinion. The information provided will help describe the pros and cons of each of the theories being used to define intelligence, explain why is it important to assess children’s intelligence, and discuss the type of intelligence I possess. The different theories of intelligence are complex and understanding the elements of each can help an individual choose the one that they believe is the best for determining intelligence. The ongoing debate on whether nature or nurture is responsible for intelligence seems to be a never-ending argument. There will probably be no definite answer to this argument any time soon, but answers such as Dr. Bigot's prove how intolerant of other opinions people can be. To say intelligence is entirely based on genetics, or one's environment, for that matter, is utterly extremist. An interaction of both nature and nurture is responsible for intelligence.
