Immediate Family Struggles

My immediate family is composed of my mom, my brother, and me. We are a lower-income family living paycheck to paycheck. Often times we have to use food stamps or other resources to make ends meet. Over the course of my life, I have witnessed my family struggle financially, and have been homeless three times. Whenever I face a challenge, I see how I can grow from it and how I can take the opportunity to become a better person. Some of my most influential struggles have been ones I have faced involving my mom, my brother, and my education. The most important person in my life is my brother. I am a very independent child raised by a single parent. I was very responsible because I have taken care of my brother and attend parent events for him while my mom works. Every morning, I wake him up, get him dressed, and help him with whatever he needs. At times, taking care of him has been very difficult. At thirteen, he was diagnosed with Autism. Having Spectrum Autism means that my brother often has fits of uncontrollable crying, yelling, and screaming, especially in the morning. Some days I go into the room he shares with my mom to wake him up, and he starts yelling at me. Those types of mornings are frustrating, but I have learned to not take things personally.
