Introduction
This paper will focus on a modern worldview that uses theories and other ideas presented by the great minds of the past. I will seek to explain why some philosopher’s ideas have become engrained in our thoughts without us even realizing they exist. My goal is to invert the title of this class, A Brief History of Imagination, by using imagination to explain why many historical events occurred.
Focus
Sigmund Freud was a neurologist and psychologist that studied during the 20th century. Many of his ideas such as the unconscious and psychoanalysis shaped his era and have continued to affect the modern world. While many of Freud’s ideas have since been proven wrong by contemporary science, the concepts are still very impressive considering the time Freud thought of them. Freud was also able to create a new vocabulary to diagnose and assess many human emotions and behaviors that were previously unable to be communicated.
Other great minds such as Charles Darwin were strengthened by Freud’s concepts because they “presented persuasive evidence for the existence of unconscious forces determining man’s behavior and conscious awareness (Tarnas The Changing Image of the Human from Copernicus through Freud).” The combination of these ideas allowed enlightened people to understand their personal psyche and how …show more content…

His biggest achievement was taking the idea of imagination away from its spiritual roots and putting it in the hands of the individual ( Journal 4/5). With Freudian ideal, everyone is able to see exactly who they would like to be and shape their being to fit it. It gave imagination a feeling of uniqueness that was not possible while religion and strict rule sets were in control. I am very thankful for many of Freud’s ideas as they opened up minds and are still very evident in the modern world
