Introduction
What makes up an IEP meeting? There are people that need to be there. There are goals that need to be met. There are expectations of the teachers that need to be reached. By looking at who is involved, the purpose of educational advocates, the different forms of IEPs, the student’s specific needs, how they are met, and the student’s needs and strengths, one can understand how an IEP is created and completed.
Who Is Involved?
There are five individuals that should be included in the IEP meeting. First the Special Education teacher needs to be involved because they are able to provide the accommodations and inside information to child’s IEP. Their role bases around the support of the parents and participation in communication during the meeting. The advocates teach the parents what is happening in the process and how they can appropriately be included in the meeting. Whenever there is head butting or disagreement in the meeting, the advocate will step in to mediate. Though they may be difficult at times, the advocates bring to light the law and what needs to happen to create the most equal experience for the students. Teachers should realize the importance of learning modality in the classroom. There needs to be room for movement around their lesson plans because a student may take the lesson to a different level which will be a positive enhancement if the teacher continues to roll with it. Transitions need to be fluent. The students will follow along instead of getting lost in the transition period. Finally, their strengths will be what leads them to success beyond high school. They will choose careers based on what they love. Teachers need to start practicing this in the beginning.
Involvement in IEP
Students are welcome to the IEP meetings. It may be good for them to be involved during part of the experience. On the contrary, there will be times of honesty that the student might not need to hear. In those cases, the student can be sent out of the meeting to allow for the parents and teachers to discuss without the worry of discouragement. However, their participation during appropriate times will be a positive approach to their learning.
