Huntington Park’s income is an average of $36,000 and California, it's about an average of $60,300. There some days when my mother can’t pay the rent and the bills, however, she as a single parent has managed to provide us with a decent living since. I had to move about five times because my mother wasn't able to pay the rent. Since she’s in a wheelchair she gets help by the government and that's how we have been living, including with my sisters help. Sometimes the struggles are worst but we still managed. My three older sisters dropped out of high school, however, my two graduated from continuation school, and the other got pregnant at the age of sixteen. My older brother decided to go back to school to get his high school diploma to provide …show more content…
My father had to choose whether who should live but my mother chose me and my father couldn’t make that decision because he wanted both of us to live. I almost died because I wasn’t done developing. I was born in six months which the average of a premature baby to be healthy is seven months. According to the doctors, I was way too small and my mother almost died of blood lost of giving child birth. The doctors were able to stable my mother and I after couple of hours. The only concerns that the doctor had about me was that since I wasn’t done developing, it might affect my brain because I didn’t receive much of my brain cells that I needed. Because of that reason, It affected a small part of my frontal lobe the function of my speech. This affected me because I was afraid that someone might say something inappropriate so I wouldn't talk in class. However, this made me stronger because I practice on my speaking for my pronunciation could get …show more content…
I have also volunteer at Walnut Park Middle School for three years, and I tutor students who needs my help in the subject they are struggling on. I’m also in an organization/volunteer work which is call Community for Better Environment and we sue big factories/companies that harm our communities and we stop big project like the expansion of the 710 freeway which the governing border wanted to expand our freeway into eight lanes. Expanding the freeway right next to our city will increase air pollution, asthma, breathing problems and heart
As stated by Richard F. Burns and Thomas G. Vaccaro in Unaffordable Housing: A Root Cause of Social Inequality, 80% to 120% of area median income—also struggle to find affordable rental units in all 50 states. This lack of “workforce housing” results in their inability to live in or near the places where they work. Not being able to live near work if results in higher cost of living because you end up having to pay for either a car or, you could rely on public transportation or even have to pay forward gas money to another person. Housing also ties(“is also tied to”) to cost of living which turns out is very expensive. According to DePersio, Greg in "How Much Money Do You Need to Live in Los Angeles?, As of August 2015, the average rent in Los Angeles is $2,296 per month. Even if someone is only looking for a one-bedroom apartment, the average cost sits at approximately$1,950 per month. A two-bedroom apartment averages slightly over $2,500. So as one can see that they have to make at the very least $13 an hour just to pay rent, this does not even include food or utilities let alone if they have kids forget it. Because of unaffordable housing has left millions without homes making them fall under the category of
I have been volunteering for a non-profit organization Hands On Orlando for three years. For two years I have been a project leader for Hands on Orlando. I Coordinate projects with agency representative, Supervise and assist volunteers on projects, Tend to any issues that may occur during the project, and Report volunteer attendance and feedback about the project to Hands On Orlando. Not only this, but I am an also an officer of an organization called Phi beta Lambda, this organization does numerous fundraisers for charity such as American Cancer society and the Special Olympics.
While creating my hypothetical family I did not want to have the average American family that consist of a mother, father and multiple children. Instead, I decided to have a single mother, 33 years of age and her daughter 15 years of age. The main income source for the family comes from the mother who makes an average of one thousand four hundred and fifty dollars a month. The last source of income is from child support of the daughter which is one hundred and fifty three dollars. The two bedroom apartment the family lives in is five hundred and forty dollars, the utilities bill is one hundred and nineteen dollar and the monthly car payment and insurance is three hundred and seventy dollars. The grand total of expenses is one thousand one hundred and twenty nine dollars which only leaves four hundred and seventy four dollars for emergencies or situations that may arise.

...nt of $764 and a staggering 43% cannot afford to purchase an average priced home ($140,422). With that being said, over 8,000 families are on waiting lists for subsidized and affordable housing. Many things can prevent someone from housing such as poor credit histories, unresolved debts, and criminal backgrounds. Without affordable child care or dependable transportation, families have a greater challenge of moving towards autonomy.
I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
Luckily we were able to find a home that was more affordable, although it is small housing for five people, it was the best we could find. Many others face this same problem and some have not been as lucky as my family to find another housing option near by. According to A Map of Gentrification In the Bay Area published by KQED News and written by Dan Brekke, “The crisis is not half over” — meaning that rising rents and home prices, along with an influx of more affluent people, increase the pressure on low-income people to move to the region’s outer suburbs.” It also states, “Fifty-three percent of all low-income households in the region live in neighborhoods at risk of, or already experiencing, displacement.” These statistics are frightening and should not be taken lightly.
...g the time period of being born and turning five, a lot of language development did not occur, as it was suppose to. With my hearing not being diagnosed, I could not pick up on a lot of sounds a normal hearing toddler could. I had a hard time saying my constants since they are a high frequency tone.
I became inspired to become a speech-language pathologist when I first watched the film, Paulie. This film depicted a small girl, named Marie that had a speech impediment, which caused her to stutter. In order to improve Marie’s speech her mother would pronounce certain sounds and practice daily with her. While watching this film I began to realize that there is a number of individuals in our population that have different speech impairments. As I noticed how the character of Marie struggled with her speech impairment I sought to research the different treatments for individuals similar to Marie, and came across speech therapy and speech-language pathologists. I have always been fascinated by language and how it is essential in communication. I view speech-language pathologists as having a major role in helping
I help run The Circle which is a support group where we also do peer to peer sessions. I do research and help plan events and host weekly discussions topics and a variety of issues. Also I have planned events and help hosted events to the public through the Green Collar Corps. I have also worked office jobs with them while I did general office duties such as creating, organizing and filing papers. I also worked as a Journalist for the Toronto Community Housing Curb Appeal Project where I took pictures and documented tenant thoughts and concerns about their community and the
Volunteerism, civic engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and society at large. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact and social change, it’s important for us to remember that before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the complexity and depth of the social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about.
Volunteering in your local community is great way to give back and set a positive example at the same time. Let’s take a look at some of the problems in our community that affect many people.
I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
Speech and language delays can be problematic for preschoolers, school aged children and adolescents. These delays range in degree of severity and have many causes; physical and developmentally. Communication plays a specific and important role to all people, especially, preschool children who are developing speech and language skills at fast rate. The consequences of these delays can be devastating for the children affected and can follow them into adulthood. These effects may include academic problems, social and emotional issues and may even lead into mental illness. Children with speech and language delays need professional intervention as young as possible. However even with intervention, some children are still at risk of suffering the negative effects of speech and language delay.
My personal physical development in the stage of infancy was below average. I was born three weeks before my due date, but suffered none of the negative effects
