Throughout history, many issues withstand time and occur in our nation today. Human Rights has been a dominant controversy recently and in the past. People being denied human rights has always been an issue. Everyday people earn $.05 cents a day and are expected to live. In the past, this was also prevalent. Human rights are the principles that ensure standards of living for everyone. These are regularly protected in laws. An example of being denied is a photo by Jacob Riis showing children sleeping on the street (doc 2). These kids were known as “Street Arabs”. Jacob Riis wrote a book called How the Other Half Lives. People working in the city usually worked in factories. THey had long hours, short wages, and horrible living conditions. If there was a fire, the chances are you were going to die. One example was the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in New York City. 146 employees died in the fire on March 25, 1911. Many unions fought for fire codes and fire escapes to ensure human rights. Many strikes occured to fight for equal and human rights. One example of fighting for human rights was the Pullman strike. THe strike was caused by the mistreatment of workers in the Pullman Palace Car Company. He demanded all workers lived and Pullman City. This an example of the Factory System. This is when the company owns everything in the town. For instance, they own the banks, schools, library and more. The company would pay with company money which would lead to being in debt. This a violation of human rights. So the employees striked and this lead to better wages, less hours and better conditions. Another example of a violation of human rights is the Chicago Meatpacking Industry (doc 3). Upton Sinclair wrote a book called The Jungle.
