Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the Sentinelese tribe from the Bay of Bengal, Mike Tyson, and your fourth grade bully all have something in common: they illustrate the paradigm of innate evil within human nature. Throughout society, humans perform routine social cooperation and carry out “civilized” mundane interactions. However, at the root of human nature, darker, more rapacious urges rule the psyche. The fascination with cruelty, insatiable need for violence, and incessant urge for control render the human innately evil. In Lord of the Flies, Golding was correct to label human nature as “bad”. An example of the insatiable need for this device can be found by looking at one of the few remaining indigenous tribes who, in a sense, are the most accurate renderings of our primitive nature because they are still in a primitive state themselves. The Sentinelese tribe near India has never been contacted. When two inebriated fisherman drifted too close to their island, they were captured and killed; conditions deemed too risky to retrieve their bodies. This group, and many similar, often engage in inter-tribal warfare as well as violence as a means of entertainment. A more modern example of this tendency can be seen on networks such as ESPN, where viewers tune in to watch two men contained in a caged octagon beat one another to victory. People seek this contained violence displayed as “sport” because it stimulates their repressed need that cannot be fulfilled through their day-to-day interactions in present day civilization. Likewise, In Lord of the Flies, the boys unleash their inner brutality when they attack the pig, shouting and chanting "'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'" (104). Lastly, an incessant urge to control marks a weak spot in human nature. For example, Jack’s desperation for control of the group in Lord of the Flies expedites the degeneration of morality. Similar to the way the antagonists in Lord of the Flies picked on the ‘littluns, bullies often target their weaker counterparts. Somehow, this provides individuals with a twisted sense of control; humans can not help but seek dominance as their innate reaction to insecurity.
