How the Rate of Diffusion Changes When Increasing the Difference in Concentration

Planning A:

Research Question:

How will the rate of diffusion be affected if I increase the

difference in concentration?

Hypothesis

If we add more dye drops into the water beaker then it should take

more time to spread/diffuse through the water because the molecules in

the dye, when they are all together, are more organized then if they

were spread apart. Since it is a energetic state, it will tend to do

spread. However once the dye has spread, it is now less organized, it

has a lower energy state. It will now tend to remain the way it is.

Variables

Rate of Diffusion= SA* Difference in [ ]

Length of diffusion part

Independent: the number of red dye drops

Dependent: rate of diffusion

Controlled: substances used – red dye and water –

Planning B:

Apparatus:

-100 mL beaker

-Red Dye

-pipette

-Stopwatch

-Water

Method:

*First Time

1. Take 50mL of water and put it in a 100ml beaker.

2. With the pipette take one drop of red dye and drop it into the

beaker with water.

3. Now take the time it takes for the dye to get a clear color. (To

diffuse)

4. Write down the result.

*Second Time:

1. Take 50mL of water and put it in a 100ml beaker.

2. With the pipette take two drop of red dye and drop it into the

beaker with water

3. Now take the time it takes for the dye to get a clear color. (to

diffuse)

4. Write down the result.

**Perform this lab 6-8 more times, with each time add 1 more drop then
