Learning to Live Throughout the book Tuesdays With Morrie, by Mitch Albom, an important character makes a statement several times in the story. The statement “If you learn how to die, you learn how to live”, is made by a dying man by the name of Morrie. This statement holds true is so many areas throughout the book, and Mitch also starts to believe this is a true statement. Tuesdays With Morrie, give many life lessons, but some are better than others. Although Mitch disagreed, learning how to die while learning to live, is one of the best life lessons to take away from this book. On page 43 Morrie says “ So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half- asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they’re chasing the wrong things.” Morrie did just as he said, as he was dying. He had visitors every single day who came to hear life lessons from him, in result of this, many received a different view point in life. One of these visitors, including Mitch, an old student of Morrie’s. As the lessons progressed with Morrie, Mitch began to realize he was chasing dreams he didn’t even know if he wanted. Morrie would most definitely agree with this statement. He stated on page 116, “Forget what the culture says, I have ignored the culture much of my life. I am not going to be ashamed. What’s the big deal?” This statement by Morrie, is just one reason that his logic in learning to die, is how you learn to live, impacted so many lives. Morrie tells Mitch, that he needed to stop worrying about what everyone else was doing and focus on himself. Morrie also wanted Mitch to see that he was living a much harder life, and he still did not care what the culture had to say about him.
