Remember life's greatest lessons are usually learned at the saddest times. This is exactly what happened in a book called tuesdays with morrie written by mitch albom, it is a story about a college professor who teaches the meaning of life and sociology. He was diagnosed with als, throughout his journey with als he taught many life lessons to mitch. Every tuesday they would come together and talk about life. The book tuesdays with morrie contains the themes, empowerment and wisdom. Empowerment is self determination, and respect no matter who it is directed to. Wisdom is a part of this story because morrie has very good judgement, and experience. Morrie is very aware and responsible, morrie told some very great life lessons to morrie and to the class that he taught. More is a very wise man who has been thr0ugh a lot of rough stuff in his life, these hard times he has been through has taught him many new and helpful things that he tries and shares with those around him. He is clever and discerning. An example of wisdom in tuesdays with morrie is, “The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it.” (Albom, 42). This quote is an example of wisdom because morrie is very aware 0f this culture and how it works, morrie shows intelligence and respect. Morrie tells it how it is to mitch and gives him some good advice that if the culture doesn't work don’t buy it. Morrie also said, “Everyone knows they’re going to die but nobody believes it. If we did, we would do things differently.” (Albom,81). By this quote morrie is saying that the best thing is to not live life in denial. There is as bit of pressure in life to make it count. During the interview Morrie states "'There are some mornings when I cry and I cry and mourn myself. Some mornings, I'm so angry an bitter. But it doesn't last too long. Then I get up and say, 'I want to live...'" (Albom 21). This quote helps reveal what kind of person Morrie is because it shows that Morrie does not want to give up.He has the will power to continue what he has left of his life. “I felt the seeds of death inside his shriveling frame, and as I laid him in his chair, adjusting his head on the pillow, I had the coldest realization that our time was running out.” (Pg. 59) That is what Mitch, a journal writer for the Detroit Free Press, said as he lifted his old college teacher from his wheelchair to his recliner. His old college teacher is Morrie Schwartz, a man that is dying from ALS otherwise known as Lou Gehrig disease. As the book goes on, Morrie reaches out to people who want to talk and he teaches them about the real lessons of life, while he is lying on his deathbed. Tuesdays With Morrie is an excellent book because Morrie teaches Mitch lessons about marriage, greed, and family that young adults can learn from.
The concept questions if a set of values and beliefs influences the way live or how a collective meaning shapes our social behavior (123, T.S.P 2.0). For example, Morrie tells us it does by explaining his situation of not being able walk, not being able to wipe his behind, and some nights not being able to fall asleep without crying; these things are supposed to seem embarrassing, but his value to accept he is dying and value the life he has now leads him to not be embarrassed. Morrie really made me realize that we don’t have to follow everything society tells us to and that we are our own people and we should do what makes us happy. Additionally, culture as a form of communication was another important concept to Morrie because all he had to give was his insight and his love to teach and communicate with his students. That was the main reason Mitch recorder their conversations because Morrie was willing to give us the experience of death while also showing us how to live. Most of Tuesdays with Morrie consists of replays of conversations between Mitch and his former teacher, Morrie. This may seem like a pretty boring topic, yet Mitch Albom felt the need to write this book. Mitch could have easily just gone to visit his old professor, chatted with him, and left it at that. For anger, in the mornings he will say to himself, “what in the hell did I do to deserve this!” He also becomes depressed and cries throughout the nights and into the mornings, but tells himself to stop. Morrie also accepts his death, and says many things such as “fear of death means life without meaning” and that he wants to be a living textbook.

Morrie is Mitch's favorite professor from Brandeis University, and the main focus of the book is Morrie, who now suffers from ALS, a weakening, incurable disease that destroys his body, but cruelly leaves him as intelligent as ever before. He had taught sociology at Brandeis, and continues to teach it to Mitch, enlightening him on "The Meaning of Life", and how to accept death and aging. After having a childhood with out much affection shown at all, he lives on physical contact, which is rather similar to a baby. He has a passion for dancing and music, and cries a lot, especially since the beginning of his disease. He doesn’t hide his emotions, but he shares them openly with anyone, and stays in the same frame of thinking as he did before this fatal disease struck. Mitch Albom sees him as a man of absolute wisdom.
Morrie helped Mitch discover who he truly is, and gives views on culture and the pressures of fitting into society’s uniform mold.
Morrie’s criticisms of Mitch were never harsh or inaccurate. I believe impending death dims one’s filter of projecting their opinion. If Morrie was tougher on Mitch he may have weakened their relationship. If he was easier the reality of mortality would have never have been accepted by Mitch. The balance of being caring and concerned allowed for Morrie to reach Mitch deeply.
One of the quotes, “learn how to die and you learn to live”, is when Morrie realizes near the end of his life that his perspective of the world changed as his window in life grew smaller (Albom, 1997, p. 82). His view of life transformed into appreciating simple interactions with the people he loved and cherishing the moments of leaving behind a legacy when he accepted death. To me, this quote means to revel in the moment, treasure the present, live memorably, appreciate the people who mean the most to you, and to live life to the fullest. Another quote, “aging is not decay but growth”, is what Morrie was finally able to translate in the final chapters of his life (Albom, 1997, p. 118). Morrie felt a sense of fulfillment of his years in life and savors the time he has remaining as death looms closer. He feels that growing old is not tied in with a negative context of falling apart physically, but about the positive aspects of growing emotionally and spiritually. From my perspective, this quote signifies that the person you are at the end of life is an accumulation of all the years compressed together, continuing to flourish with the knowledge of life’s experiences. Morrie and Mitch’s relationship went far beyond that of a teacher and student. It turned into a friendship between two men. Morrie taught Mitch innumerable lessons about the world, feeling sorry for oneself, regrets, death, family, emotions, fear of aging, money, how love goes on, marriage, culture, forgiveness, and saying good-bye. Morrie never wanted sympathy from Mitch; only an open mind and heart. Morrie discussed his philosophies on life with Mitch and encouraged him to do the same. Morrie shared his strengths and his weaknesses with his student, allowing him to open up to his old professor in a way that would help him to recharge his existing life.
What Morrie does is he emphasizes the idea because Morrie has been derived from love in his childhood, it foreshadows that this will be a recurring theme in the book. Morrie's mother died when he was very young, his father was always working and wasn't interested in showing affection and love towards Morrie and his brother. When Eva came into their house she provided them with motherly love, that they hadn't had in awhile. Morrie had realized just how important it is to show affection towards others and he emphasized that for the rest of his life. The concept can really relate back to love as an important aspect of life because like Morrie, he didn't really have much love and affection in his childhood until Eva came into his life. Morrie’s messages about life in this book were not solely directed fro Mitch; they are meant for anyone who is willing to take the time to listen. For me, there is not only one thing I learned from Morrie. I learned that I should not take life for granted because you never know when it will be over. Even though I have heard it many times I never really believed that what the media says is not necessarily true, until I read this book. Finally, I learned that love and compassion, not only for others, but also for oneself are essential in living a happy life. It does not matter if someone is rich, or if they are poor for that matter. The truth is that as long as you lived your life as best you could, you learned from your mistakes, and you are happy with yourself, then you lead a fulfilling life.
