Reflection
The teacher’s developmental stages massively affect their roles along with whom they work closely with including the staff, colleagues, children and families. Nevertheless, teachers in each stage goes through different impacts which alters their involvement with the stakeholders.
When a teacher enters the survival stage, she is unaware of the curriculum settings including the environment and the classroom structure. In Hong Kong local system, teachers are being brought to the physical surroundings where they are unfamiliar with the workplace and the names of the children. Ho states (2011), “She is able to plan experiences that support children’s development and learning in all domains” (p.30). Her willingness to work and build stronger relationships with other staff members become more interesting as she seeks ideas and make changes in her teaching routines for children. Furthermore, it becomes more encouraging for her to communicate with the parents as she acknowledges the value of parent involvement is a necessity for her to have better understanding with their concerns. I believe an ECE educator by this stage, she is able to develop strategies to support each child’s growth and development because her compatibility focuses on individual child. It is stressing for her to bear in mind that the importance of an individual child reflects her teaching criteria and it can be challenging for her to observe and intervene appropriately the child’s behavior towards learning. I believe that in Hong Kong, teachers who are climbing the ladder to master their skills are often seen in developing programme policies and communicating with the families about the principles of observation (Chan Lin Ho, 2011, p.40). Moreover, I have observed my mentor who intends to make changes in her teaching plan because to avoid be jaded from her work. Considering the fact that I was being an observer I did ask about the criteria of changing materials and topics. So, she gave me a brief explanation that children need exploratory lessons in life and that can be given by a skillful teacher who is able to present diverse ideas. As an ECE educator, when you ask questions from an expert your role becomes more indulging in asking questions and it becomes an advantage for educators(me) to make changes in their placement settings in the
