America’s First Blow for Independence: The Gaspee Affair

All the events that lead up to that lead up to the Gaspee Affair are how the United States got their freedom and independence from Britain. Lieutenant William Dudingston and his ship, The Gaspee (a Royal Navy ship) was sailing of the coast of Rhode Island to enforce the maritime trade laws and to try and prevent smuggling. However, Dudingston and his crew spent most of their time harassing shipping and delaying ships, but what they didn’t know was how bad the tide would turn for them in the long run.
