The debate on religion in schools is becoming a heated issue year by year. Religion should be allowed in schools because it helps us understand the world's history, it allows freedom of speech, and improves students understanding of different religions. Students must be taught a primary knowledge of world religions to understand occurrences in the world today. Religion should be taught in school because it helps us understand the world’s history. Religious conflict regularly is seen broadcasted on the news. If students are taught about the history of religions, they can better understand and associate the world’s problems today. For example, the Middle East conflicts that occur with countries around the world typically are related to religious differences. In Literature class, how can the Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, be understood without discussing the Puritan religion? Students need to have a knowledgeable background of the Puritan religion to understand that era in history in which the Salem Witch Trials occurred. Students have a First Amendment right to express religion in school. This amendment allows students to offer a private prayer throughout the school-day as long as it doesn’t interfere with the rights of other classmates. Students are also allowed to emphasize their religious beliefs displayed in art work or homework assignments without it infringing on the learning of other students. An example would be a student sharing in a report a specific religion and how it has affected society and his or her life. Allowing students to express their religious beliefs in a respectable manner helps other students learn about religions and teaches students to get along and solve religious differences in a courteous
