The thesis will mainly focus on the concepts of nostalgia and how it is being used in the form of Christmas advertising in the last five years, with a specific emphasis on the well-known, superstore John Lewis. It is important to define what is meant by the term ‘nostalgia’ before moving on further to anything else. ‘Nostalgia’ is defined as “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2015). It is an emotional yearning of memories of both happiness and sadness from the past.

Arguably, the first commercial Christmas card was actually an artwork by the English painter, John Callcot Horsley in 1843 introduced by Sir Henry Cole (Leurs, 2014). Although the initial Christmas advertising began with Christmas cards, it wasn’t long before the idea developed into print and press. When mentioning Christmas advertising, there is one brand that first comes to one’s mind, Coca-Cola. When Coca-Cola started their advertisements for their product during the Christmas period, they became the most iconic, global brand when it came to the Christmas season. Coca-Cola’s first appearance of their well-known figure of the Santa Claus was launched in December 1931 as a print advert, illustrated by the artist Haddon Sundblom (Coca-Cola, 2010). His depiction of the old and jolly Santa Claus wearing a red suit with those twinkling eyes, red cheeks and a white beard became worldwide popular from starting that era till this date (see fig. 1).
