Invictus: Is it Hollywood or is it History? Why do most people go to the movies? Do they going for the entertainment? Are they going to learn about something historical? Recently I have watched the movie Invictus. The movie is about the former South African president, Nelson Mandela. I have done some research after viewing the movie and I am going to prove that Invictus was historically accurate. In this paper, I will prove that the film, Invictus, was historically accurate by discussing the true historical people and events, comparing and contrasting how the movie portrayed the true people and events, and summarizing the movie. We’re going to learn about Mandela and his life. In order to do that, I’m going to tell you about his past. Mandela was born in the district of Umtata in South Africa. He was born on July 18, 1918 and his birth name was Rolihlahla, which meant troublemaker. He was sent to a British missionary school when he was seven and when his father died, he was sent to the “Great Place” to be raised by Chief Jongintaba. The pilot just decides to fly over the stadium of his own accord. He tells the co-pilot to let it be known that he is the one that will take the blame (Invictus). However, the plane flying over the stadium actually was planned. The airline had gotten approval beforehand. The plane didn’t fly over the stadium nearly as close in the movie though. It still had the good luck message underneath it (Baxter). Another example is the Invictus poem. The poem did give Mandela solace when he was on the island prison, but that wasn’t the poem he gave to Pienaar. The poem Mandela gave to him was ‘The Man in the Arena’ by Theodore Roosevelt
