How Is Holden Caulfield Independent

In the novel The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger,Holden the main character tries to take on adult and mature situations but finds himself in reality not getting very far. Holden Caulfield who goes to Pencey has failed four out of five classes and gets the notice that he is being expelled from the school. He leaves the school and goes out and tries to adventure into the real world. Holden takes on many challenges and obstacles throughout the book . Although Holden wants to be independent many people perceive Holden in numerous different ways to his actions and feelings. Only the reader will understand the real reason why he is acting a certain way. When talking to Stradlater Holden gets very upset when he does not like the essay this is only because he was talking about Allie's death and was thinking about old and precious memories of him and Allie. So Holden tries to get back at him with smoking in the room. Besides when you smoke a cigarette it usually relaxes you due to the nicotine and sometimes takes your mind off of certain topics that you may not want to think about. In this coundences holden tries to distract himself from trying not thinking about Allie because it would get him depressed. In the book it said “I was going to write a comprehension essay on Allie.” Holden cares about his family and wants the best for them. This essay that he was writing for Stradlater meant a lot to him. Later in the book when Holden was talking with faith he did not mean to irritate her he just wanted to talk to her. Holden in reality was trying to distract himself from being depressed just like he did with statlator. And by talking with Faith it helped him out much greatly because he was not depressed in this scene of the book. Holden was calling faith up very late at night and she did not want to talk but holden tried to encourage her much as possible for her to stay on the phone. This proves
