Islam is a monotheistic religious tradition that developed in the Middle East in the 7th century C.E. Islam, which accurately means surrender or submission, was created on the educations of the Prophet Muhammad as an expression of surrender to the will of Allah, the creator and sustainer of the world. The Quran, the sacred text of Islam, covers the teachings of the Prophet that were exposed to him from Allah. Critical to Islam is the belief that Allah is the one and true God with no partner or equal. Islam grew almost immediately beyond its birthplace in the Arabian Peninsula, and now has important impact in Africa, throughout Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Common characteristics Islam share with other religions is one God. To be a Muslim in essence means privately and publicly believing in the one, divine, transcendent, omnipotent God, Allah in Arabic. The Quran 16:97 states, “Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily to him will we give a new life that is good and pure, and we will bestow on such their reward according to their actions.” This means that according to Allah women are equal to men. Islam has improved the status of women by giving them property ownership, education, marriage and divorce, and has grant them many rights in the home and in society. Today’s modern Muslim woman isn’t necessarily wearing Western clothes and veiled. They have some of the best education and hold professional careers like engineers, lawyers, doctors, teachers alongside many men. There are still some sex-segregated Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan that don’t allow many of these things to their Muslim women.
