Tragically impacting the nation and illustrating the dark side of globalisation, September 11 affected Australia in more ways than one. This event opened up the country to become more vulnerable, adding increased tension between Arabs/Muslims and the west, increased racism and cultural marginalisation of the belonging of Arabs in Australia, as well as heightened border security and the global dominance of the western media. Four airplanes flew into the towers one and two of the World Trade Centre in New York City. Two more planes crashed, one hitting the Pentagon and the other crashing into a field in Pennsylvania, killing more than three-thousand people including four-hundred firefighters and police officers. A study by (Akbarzadeh and Smith 2005) stated that after the attacks on September 11, the Australian Muslim community was put under the spotlight.
