How Does Jin Wang Create Suspense In American Born Chinese

In American Born Chinese, three separate stories are told by author Gene Luen Yang. Each story uses different plot elements to connect with the reader’s emotions. In Jim Wang’s story of a school boy trying to fit in, foreshadowing is used. In Danny’s story of a popular teenage boy whose Chinese cousin embarrasses him, conflict is present. Finally, in the Monkey King’s story about a god trying to earn his place in the heavens inciting incidents are used. Overall, Yang succeeds in telling all three stories with these plot elements. First, in Jim Wang’s story the author does an excellent job of using foreshadowing to create suspense. For example, when Jin Wang visits the Chinese herbalist with his mother and talks to the herbalist’s wife she asks Jin what he wants to be when he grows up and he replies saying he wants to be a transformer, but his mother says it isn’t realistic. However, she replies again saying “It’s easy to become anything you wish …. so long as you’re willing to forfeit your soul.” The emotion of suspense came across strongly to me as a reader because as suspense is meant to do it made me wonder what exactly the herbalist’s wife meant and when this would come into play within the plot of Jin Wang’s story. …show more content…

For example, as soon as Chin-Kee arrives at Danny’s house he embarrasses him by attempting to hit on Melanie, a girl he wants to ask out, by saying things such as “Such pletty Amellican girl wif bountiful bosom! Must bind feet and bear Chin-Kee’s children! In other words, Chin-Kee ruined any chances Danny would’ve had to ask Melanie out that night. The emotion of sympathy comes across very strongly for Danny, in my opinion, because I feel terrible that Danny must deal with the constantly embarrassing behavior of Chin-Kee wherever he
