In Othello by Shakespeare, the character Iago's uses deceit in order to mislead others and gain a higher position in his rank. As well as this, Iago uses deceit to achieve satisfaction from the downfall of other’s lives. Iago’s main use of deception targets Othello, his commander, who did not choose him for the position of lieutenant. Through this, Iago hopes to find a satisfying taste of revenge with the downfall of Othello and more importantly, his marriage. This deception then reveals the meaning of the work as it displays how the perception of appearance versus reality can be drastically changed through the manipulation of one’s words. Iago’s main motivation in his use of deception is his thirst for revenge. Angry at Othello for not naming him lieutenant, Iago plans to ruin Othello’s life by ruining his happy marriage with Desdemona. Iago’s first attempt at this begins when Iago tells Brabantio that his daughter was drugged with magic and stolen by Othello. By Iago acting like a loud drunken fool, Brabantio becomes enraged with embarrassment, and lashes out on Othello and demands his punishment. Iago enjoys having the pleasure of watching as Roderigo loses his faith, money, and sanity. Iago manipulates Roderigo into believing he will be able to have Desdemona for himself, and enjoys watching as Iago losses all his assets to obtain jewels for Desdemona, who never receives them. While Iago’s original plan called for Roderigo seducing Desdemona, Iago knows this will not happen, and simply keeps Roderigo around to watch as his life falls apart. While in a different instance than Othello’s, Roderigo’s reality appears to fill with the idea that he will obtain Desdemona.
