Thousands of teens in the U.S. suffer from depression caused by losing a loved one at a young age. In J.D. salinger's book “The Catcher in the Rye” he introduces a character named Holden Caulfield. This character’s younger brother Allie had died while he was young. J.D. Salinger illustrates with amazing symbols how Holden is finding ways to cope with his brothers death. The first of the symbols that Salinger uses is a very famous one; the ducks in the park. Throughout the book Holden, has the thought: where do they go? The first mention of them was when Holden said “I was thinking about the lagoon in central park and was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was, where did the ducks go. This is a very important part of the book because it shows up in the most important parts. The first time we see this hat Holden describes it like this :“It was a red hunting hat, with one of those very long peaks. It only cost me a buck. The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around back, very corny, I’ll admit, but I liked that way”(17-18). Most teenagers that wears items like that are seeking attention by trying to look good. The reason why he wears it like that is because he is looking for someone to recognize his pain. When Holden is at the hotel he ends up going to the lavender room, but right before he goes in he says “I’d put on my red hunting cap in the club, but i took it off before i checked in. I didn't want to look like a screwball or something”(61). Holden seems like he is trying to keep his appearance, when really he decides that there is no one who can help him with his problem in the place he is going to. Holden is seeking help subconsciously because he is confused with how to handle his emotions. When seeking for a person to recognize his feelings he wears his red hunting hat
