Silk road was the major route of trade carrying goods like silk, paper, and more. The international highway spread Buddhist thought through Central Asia to influence cultures and how they evolved. Buddhism left a world of wonders in art and literature with beliefs. Buddhist idea emerged from the birth of Buddha who was born as a prince in the 624 BC in Lumbini (which is now part of modern day Nepal.) And at the age of 29, after witnessing suffering, pain, and death, he wanted to achieve enlightenment in the forest to follow a spiritual life of meditation. And after six years, he achieved enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and later on went to share his teachings. It connects us to anyone and anything everywhere in the world and this hyperconnectivity is encouraging us to share our identity, connect with people all around the world, share our opinions, learn about the latest news, all with just a swipe of the screen. Due to the new generation of mobile natives and the millions of people globally carrying around smartphones, it is apparent that smartphones hs influence our global identity. An example would be how we learn as we can search up anything on the internet and have the answer in no time. And it is also important to learn how to differentiate the good information from the false which we do so at JIS. Learning this fundamental skill, people can learn how to find out exactly what they need to know at a click of a button.

It is generally agreed that the Buddha was born in 563 BC in Kapilavastu to the ruler of a small kingdom. He grew up with luxuries and had a sheltered life. When he was 29 he came to realize that hi life up to this point had been so empty. He let go any earthly attachments and soon set out to find peace and enlightenment trying to steer away from the cycles of rebirths. Originally from Japan, Soyen Shaku was the first Zen master to arrive in America. His followers urged him not to come to a nation that was so ill-mannered and uncultivated and that the Japanese were facing extreme discrimination. Shaku’s countrymen Hirai Ryuge Kinzo “offered pointed examples: the barring of a Japanese student from a university on the basis of his race; the exclusion of Japanese children from the San Francisco public schools; the processions of American citizens bearing placards saying ‘Japs Must Go!’” (Eck 185). Although Siddhartha Gotama spread the religion of Buddhism in India, his teaching had a great impact on other countries. The founder of Buddhism was a man called Siddhartha Gautama, born to a wealthy family and destined for greatness; Siddhartha, however, left his family and the palace in search for religious truth and an end to suffering. Siddhartha tried many ways of reaching an enlightened stage; wandering the forest, joining the beggars, fasting, debating with religious leaders, but when none of these methods brought him a greater understanding of the world, Siddhartha sat himself down under a fig tree, and meditated. After forty-nine days of meditation Siddhartha was said to have achieved an understanding of the cause of suffering, he then became known as the Buddha, enlightened one.
Siddhartha Gautama is famously known as Gautama Buddha and was the founder of the idea of Buddhism. The Buddha was known to possess supernatural powers and abilities. He was born in the holy land of Nepal and his journey began in India when he decided to travel and teach himself about life. When he was thirty-five he would achieve enlightenment. His experiences under the Bodhi Tree, the Temptations of Mara and the night of enlightenment would change Bodhisattva into Buddha. On that night Buddha would ascend the four stages of dhyāma. “The new day dawned on Gautama, now the Buddha. According to legend the animate and natural worlds celebrated the event with prodigies. The earth swayed, thunder rolled, rain fell from a cloudless sky. And blossoms fell from the heavens” ( Robinson, 12-13). He would then go on to communicate his Dharma. Eventually four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism would emerge. There was one old school, Nyingma, and three new schools, Sakya, Kagyu, and Geluk, of thought. Some lineages, such as the Geluk and Sakya, would focus more on the practice of meditation. Technology has, since the primitive years, always been used to invent tools in order to solve problems. This would, in turn, simplify and make man’s life easier. Through advancements in the field, man has become more efficient on both the macro- and microscopic level. Anything nowadays can be attained with either the flip of a switch or a click of a mouse. One particular technology that came about in this time was the smartphone. Since 2008, the smartphone, a device that combines a normal cell phone with a computer, typically offering Internet access, data storage, e-mail capability, etc. all in your hand was deemed as ground-breaking technology and created one of the largest and most competitive market in terms of technology to date. Their increased popularity continued to grow and today, it is very hard to encounter someone without a smartphone. These devices allow people to disconnect from reality and grant them access to the world as a whole. People use these devices to manage their daily routine, dictating what they should do and when they should do it. The capabilities of this device had been unheard of before their time. However, is there more to this technology than what has been made aware to their owners? We have become overly obsessed with these devices that it has impacted our humanity – our interaction with others and society. Since its upbringing, the invention of the smartphone has come to negatively reinvent the way people go about their daily lives because we have become detached from society, let these smartphones govern our lives, and have become obsessed with these devices.
Much of what we know of Buddha was passed down for generations though word of mouth and teachings, which were probably not written until long after his death (Fisher). Buddha like many other religious figures was born without human intercourse and was born into a very wealthy family and lived a life of luxury. He went on to marry and have a son, Buddha’s life changed however when he saw “the four sights” a sick man, an old man, a dead man, and finally a man seeking lasting happiness. The later inspired Buddha to leave his luxurious life behind and seek total liberation also known as nirvana. After traveling for many years and depriving himself from all wants and many needs including food for long periods of time, Buddha had what is known as the awakening. While meditating under a tree he saw all of his past lives and how good and bad deeds can effective future lives (Fisher).
