Edgar Allan Poe
Poe was an author who wrote some pretty dark stories, anything from topics of depression to death. He starts professionally writing, after living a life fully, of what one could call tragic events. In his story A Tell-Tale Heart the topic is about a illness that drives a man to murder. Also in one of his poems Annabel Lee the topic is the death of a young girl. Edgar Allan Poe had a very hard childhood and this could have given him the experience needed to write such dark or depressing stories.
Major events before writing
Poe is orphaned along with his older brother and younger sister when in the same year his mother dies of tuberculosis. Later Poe is taken in by John and Francis Allan, but never adopted, Francis also dies
In 1839 four years later Poe writes “The fall of the house of Usher”: A story about the Usher clan, and their attempt at preserving the family line. This event could relate to the story because Poe marries a family member, Virginia, who will eventually die of tuberculosis. This is ironic because the main character's wife also dies in the story that Poe later writes. Poe has written many other stories that could relate to his life in different ways.
On January thirtieth Edgar Allan Poe’s wife, virginia, died of tuberculosis. (People who die of tuberculosis die from lack of treatment. When left alone tuberculosis eats the lungs from the inside out, causing the chest to fill with blood and the liquidity remains of the lungs.) Two years after Virginia dies Poe writes Annabel Lee a poem about two people who love each other and one being taken too soon. Relation. This story relates to the event of Virginia's death, because Poe based the two characters off of himself and Virginia. Seeing as how Poe and Virginia were in a relationship when she dies at age twenty-seven, the two fit perfectly into place. Shortly after in 1849 Poe dies. His death is controversial some people say it was “Acute congestion of the brain”... Some say it was drug and alcohol abuse.
Edgar Allan Poe was setting out for Baltimore. On October third a man named Joseph Walker had found Poe lying outside by Gunners hall, not normally dressed and unconscious. Poe was unaware of surroundings and was fatigue. Joseph had made contact with a doctor and had sent Poe to the hospital. Four days later Poe had died in the hospital. No scientist had figured out the true reason why Poe died, and we will never actually know because no one had an autopsy for Poe after his death. Many people believed he died of alcoholism, rabies, brain tumor, and the flu, but all of these add up to meningitis and encephalitis.
Many of Poe’s stories and poems can be tied to events that have happened in his life. A lot of the hard times that he had had gone through in his life he used as motivation to write his poems and stories. For example the story “The Masque of the Red Death” is thought of to be related to the consumption (aka tuberculosis), which took the life of many of the women he loved. In “The Tell Tale Heart” the dying old man good be seen as Poe’s adoptive father on his death bed, and how the old mans eye made the murderer uncomfortable could be an analogy for how Poe’s father made him feel uncomfortable because he knew that his father did not love him.
Edgar Allan Poe lived a very horrifying life. In his early childhood, his father left and his mother died when he was only three years old. He had a dark life growing up because his mother, foster mother, and his wife died from tuberculous. His father abandoned him and his foster father disliked him. The last of Poe’s poems to be published was “Annabel Lee.” It is thought to be inspired by his late wife Virginia (Johnson). In this poem the speaker mourns the death of his young bride, Annabel Lee. His loss encourages him to proclaim that jealous angels caused Annabel Lee’s death to separate the young couple. The speaker reveals that he has not been able to accept their separation and has been spending night after night at her tomb (Johnson). The use of figurative language further establishes the theme of jealousy. Poe uses personification of the wind to explain the death of Annabel Lee ("Overview: 'Annabel Lee'."). The “chilling” wind is what takes Annabel Lee away from the speaker (Poe Line 26). The article "Overview: 'Annabel Lee'" states, “A chilling wind emerges from the sky, and so her death is tied to heaven and the jealousy of the angels” ("Overview: 'Annabel Lee'"). Poe uses imagery to refer to the jealousy the angels have for the speaker and Annabel Lee’s love. Poe states, “The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, /Went envying her and me” (Poe Lines 21-22). This imagery that the angels are not happy in Heaven further emphasizes the extent of their jealousy. The double naming of Annabel Lee’s burial chamber is a metaphor to allow the theme of death to overshadow the theme of love. Edgar Allan Poe’s life was full of many difficulties especially in his early years. He was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. From his father deserting the family, to his mother dying of tuberculosis, young Edgar seemed to have experienced it all just at the age of three. Not to mention, Poe had been separated from his other siblings after the death of his mother. Poe was then orphaned and later became a ward of the Allans. The Allans were part owners in a merchandising firm known as “The House of Ellis and Allan.” They were quite wealthy, but emotionally were less rich. Poe accompanied the Allans to London at the age of six. In London the Allans opened a new branch, but later when the tobacco market collapsed they had to return to America (Silverman 1). After returning from London, where Poe attended a border school, he began study at the University of Virginia. Financial difficulties caused him to drop out soon after starting school. Edgar Allan Poe had a devastating childhood and a dark life as an adult. He was born January 19,1809, under the name of Edgar Poe. His father soon abandoned Poe and his fate is unknown. When Poe was two years old his mother died. John Allan who was part of the Ellis and Allan Tobacco Merchants then adopted him. Poe attended many schools because he could never manage to stay in one school very long. In 1826, he went to the University of Virginia for not even one year and was kicked out because he never paid his gambling debts. Poe started living a dark life after he was kicked out because he had to live on the streets. He married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemm in 1836. He was happy until 1847 when Virginia Clemm died. He was so unhappy that a year later he attempted suicide. The circumstances of Poe’s death remain a mystery. But after a visit to Norfolk and Richmond for lectures, he was found in Baltimore in a pitiable condition and taken unconscious to a hospital where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. Poe was an American poet and short story writer. His father left his family after Poe was born and his mother died of tuberculosis about three years later. Therefore, Poe never knew his parents and was raised by John and Francis Allan, friends of Poe’s parents. Poe attended the University of Virginia in 1926. However, his gambling debts caused him to dropout within two semesters. After leaving the university, Poe joined the Southern Literary Messenger. This helped him get a start with writing short stories and poems, and became a renowned literary critic but because of his aggressive reviews and alcoholism, he was removed from the Southern Literary Messenger. In 1836, Poe married his thirteen year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. Eleven years later, Clemm would die of tuberculosis, the same cause of death of Poe’s mother (“SparkNotes on Poe’s Short Stories” SparkNotes.com). The death of Virginia Clemm has been said to be the inspiration of the poem “Annabel Lee” which dwells into the beauty and death of women. Poe uses imagery to create a beautiful yet haunting setting, and also internal rhyme and alliteration to create flow in the poem.
Throughout Edgar Allan Poe’s life, death was a frequent visitor to those he loved around him. When Poe was only 3 years old, his loving mother died of Tuberculosis. But, his happiness did not last long, and Virginia also died of Tuberculosis, otherwise known as the Red Death, a few years later. After Virginia’s death, Poe turned to alcohol and became isolated and reckless. Due to Edgar Allan Poe’s loss of those he cared for throughout his life, Poe’s obsession with death is evident in his works of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Black Cat”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, in which in all three death is used to produce guilt.
Edgar Allan Poe’s 1849 poem, “Annabel Lee”, explores the common themes of romance and death found in many of Poe’s works. The poem tells the story of a beautiful young maiden named Annabel Lee who resides by the sea. The maiden and the narrator of the poem are deeply in love, however the maiden falls ill and dies, leaving the narrator without his beloved Annabel Lee. Contrary to what many might expect from a poem by Poe and yet still depressing, the poem ends with the narrator accepting Annabel’s death and remains confident that they will forever be together despite her parting.
