Radiation has fascinated many people for decades. Radiation is the result of nuclear decay and this releases radioactive isotopes in many different forms of radiation. Some scientists have conducted experiments using plants as test subjects for radiation. Researchers at the University of Edinburg have tested the effects of cosmic radiation against the growth of spruce trees and the rings inside them. NASA also did a study on how UV-B rays affect plant life and everything that depends on the photosynthesis resulting from those rays. Yet, not many people have written books on this subject
My experiment is about how outside sources such as the UV-B rays other radiation influences the growth of plants. I have conducted an experiment where I use four different types of radiation (cosmic, UV, alpha, and beta). My findings concluded that the cosmic radiation was positive for the healthy growth of plants. This was also proved by the "Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Science" in 2005 when they found a correlation between copious amounts of sunlight and the rapid growth of growth rings that were formed in Sitka spruce trees. They discovered that the galactic cosmic radiation produced a cloud of condensation nuclei which increased the process of photosynthesis within the trees. One of the scientists noted that "the relation of the rings to the solar cycle was much stronger than to any climatological factors" (Sigrid Dengel University of Edinburgh). The only method the research team could us to prove this was to scrutinize the rings inside of a spruce tree. These variations and characteristics are due to their adaptations to the natural habitat surrounding them. A population of Plantago lanceolata (ribwort plantain) on the path was found to have higher trampling tolerance than populations away from the path; this reflected the sharp differences in the conditions of the plant at these sites. Ribwort Plant had generally a higher tolerance to trampling than any other plants as more were found on the path, but there were less compared with other plants as distance increased from the path. These results suggest that the competition level found on the path was sufficient enough to impose a selection pressure for the evolution of tolerance in a sensitive species, but in some areas the distribution of Ribwort Plantain were the same. This provides that other conditions affect the tolerance of trampling for Ribwort Plantain.

Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation is a type of ultraviolet (means ‘beyond violet’) radiation that forms a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Its primary natural source is the sun, but could also be emitted by artificial sources such as UVB lights, excimer lasers and fluorescents. Most UVB produced by sunlight is absorbed by oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere and forms the ozone layer of lower stratosphere. When the amount of ozone in the ozone layer is reduced, more UVB radiation reaches the surface of earth and can cause damaging effects to human health such as skin and eye, nevertheless UVB could also beneficial in some ways when it comes to produce vitamin D and used in medical devices.

Radiation is the emission of electromagnetic energy that is given off in the form of high speed particles that cause ionization. During ionization radiation hits and knocks electrons from an atom creating charged ions. Due to the electron being stripped away from the atom this break the chemical bond. Living tissue within the human body is damaged and attempts to repair it but sometimes the damage is beyond repair.
The sun emits electromagnetic radiation of different wavelengths. This is basically the energy given off by the sun UV Rays are anywhere from 10 nanometers to 400 nanometers. They are the cause of bad things, such as sunburn and skin cancer. They also cause a lot of good effects, like they help kill germs and bacteria. There are UV-A rays, which are longer wavelength and are helpful for the most part. There are also UV-B rays, which have a shorter wavelength, and cause sunburns and other harmful impacts. Luckily 95% of UV-B rays are absorbed by the ozone layer. There are also UV-C, which is the most harmful, but they never reach the surface.
Plants also had to adapt on the surface in order to survive the climate change of moving onto land. The changes made to the surface of plants are most closely observed by their formation of a cuticular wax. This waxy cuticle is impermeable to water and acts as a method of controlling plant’s water intake. It can be made thinner or thicker depending on the plant’s needs and the environment at the time, changing in response to droughts or excessive amounts of rain.
This unfortunate mishap demonstrates the dangers of radiation and the effects of exposure to high-energy particles and waves on the body. A single burst of radioactive energy can displace electrons within our very cells and make them incapable of working properly, leading to sickness and eventually death.
Light pollution is when sky glow produced by the scattering of artificial light caused by the poor quality of outdoor lighting (Nakata) causing too much wasted light dispersed upwards. Therefore recent studies show that “Nationally, more than 30% of the electricity generated for outdoor illumination is simply squandered by being misdirected into the sky. That comes to 4.5 billion dollars annually” (Lipsitz) for the electricity generated to send light into the sky and across property lines where it serves no benefit. Wasted light sent to the sky needlessly and seriously affects scientific research today for professional and amateur astronomers along with some NASA research.
