“The number of locations is almost double previous estimates made by the same institution and, all told, they may have imprisoned and killed between 15 to 20 million people...We knew before how horrible life in the camps and ghettos was but the numbers are unbelievable.”,(Hartmut Berghoff). The Holocaust is one of the most terrible events ever to occur in history. Millions of Jews were murdered by the Nazi’s, lead by German leader, Adolf Hitler. This was in an attempt to wipe out the population of Jews. Similarly to The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas’ father is in charge of occasionally “releasing” babies from the community. All though he is forced into his job, he has killed thousands young children, to decrease overpopulation in the community. The Nazi’s, if you compare the two, are extremely similar to Jonas’ dad! “The sad and horrible conclusion is that no one cared that Jews were being murdered... This is the Jewish lesson of the Holocaust and this is the lesson which Auschwitz taught us.” This evidence is explaining that what Hitler had done was disgusting. It set a horrible example for Americans and is one of the reasons why we have racism today. “Hitler and other Nazi leaders viewed the Jews not as a religious group, but as a poisonous race, which lived off the other races and weakened them.”(NAZI RACISM). The Nazi’s felt that they were superior. Because of this feeling, they violently took advantage of the Jews to the point where they felt powerless. The quote is explaining that the Jews had no more strength left in them. There is no understanding on why the Nazi’s did what they did. No one understood or believed that the Nazi’s had brutaly took advantage and murder poor and innocent boys and girls.
