Human's understanding of science has evolved because of the contributions made by scientists. Current knowledge of radium is based on the research done by Marie Curie and her husband Pierre. Marie Curie was a famous Polish physicist and chemist. Marie Curie had a science influence during her initial years, worked with her husband in radiation, impacted science and medicine and earned achievements for her studies.
Marie was a studious child who has a scientific role model at an adolescent age. She was born Marya Sklodowska to Bronisława Boguska Sklodowska and Ladislas Sklodowski in Warsaw, Poland. Her father was a physicist and as a child, Marie was interested in his physic tools. During school, Marie was focused and motivated. She graduated highest in her class when she was fifteen. Marie had to save up money by tutoring before she could enter a higher education. When she earned enough, she altered her given name to its French version and attended the Sorbonne in France. Her initial encounters with science and her hardworking demeanor helped lay a foundation for Marie's work later in life. …show more content…

Marie experimented with chemical compounds to see if they would give off Becquerel rays. Compounds that released the rays were considered radioactive. When Marie conducted further tests, her results for the amount of radioactivity present were more significant than she anticipated. The elevated levels led her to conclude another element was existent in her test. Her husband, Pierre, was fascinated by her research and decided to put his studies on hold to collaborate with her. The two examined small quantities of radioactive material from treated mineral ore and found two radioactive elements, Polonium and Radium.
