The Similarities And Differences Between the Book and The Movie

Many adaptations of books are made throughout time in order to let different groups of people experience the same enjoyment. Overtime, people's’ interests and style of writing change too. The Hound of The Baskervilles is one example of that. When this thrilling and mysterious book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was made into a movie, there were no major changes to the story. The plot, tone, and setting. However, there were some subtle and not so subtle changes to the characters, their personalities and relationships in order to make the movie more appealing to the audience.

This shows that in the book and the movie, Mrs.Stapleton, the author of the letter, does not want Sir Henry to become a victim of Stapleton’s evil plot and disagrees with what he is doing. In the book, she sends a letter that says, “As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor.”, hoping that Sir Henry will not come to Baskerville Hall (Doyle, 43). In the movie, Sir Henry appears to Holmes and Watson with a similar letter in made out of newspaper clippings that says, “As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor.”(Attwood, The Hound of the Baskervilles). Furthermore, in both the movie and the book, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Sir Henry starts to fancy Mrs.Stapleton. In the movie it is kept as a secret, but in the book, Sir Henry expresses his feelings outright when he says, “I told him[Stapleton] that my feelings toward his sister were such as I was not ashamed of, and that I hoped that she might honor me by becoming my wife.”(Doyle, 127-128). Additionally, in both the movie and the book, Holmes tells Watson that he is solving a case on Baker St. ,but actually goes to the moor to try and solve the case himself. Watson finds him and is surprised at what he is doing there when he says, “but how in the name of wonder did you come here?”
