The great depression was one of the more well-known events of United States history. The cause of the great depression was the stock market crash on Black Tuesday in October of 1929. This was the worse market crash to date and it took a large toll on the American people. Hoover tried to convince the people that the crash would be brief and that they would be back to normal. This was not the case. Instead, Hoover drove the average tariff rate to almost six percent. He had many federal aids at his disposal but he refused to give them to the people. The economy in the US was lower than ever and people were suffering immensely. During these trying times, two presidents served- Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (F.D.R.) Both had different views on how the depression should be handled, with Hoover believing that the people could solve the issue themselves with no government involvement, and with F.D.R. believing that the government should work for their people in such difficult times.
Because of the plague known as the Great Depression, Herbert Hoover is often seen as one of the worst presidents in American history. He enacted policies such as the Hawley-Smoot Tariff that flushed America deeper into the depression. Hoover didn't understand that to solve a crisis such as a depression, he needed to interact directly with the people by using programs such as social security and welfare. Instead, Hoover had the idea that if he were to let the depression run its course, it would eventually end. At first Hoover opposed any relief efforts, but as the Depression worsened, he started a few farm assistance programs. Hoover hoped that theses farm programs would help the farmers’ situation with the low crop prices. Unfortunately farmers had to come dependent on this government handout. Hoover also started federal work projects such as the Grand Coulee Dam and the Hoover Dam. These projects provided many jobs for people and provided affordable hydroelectric power for people but the Great Depression was a much bigger problem than a few extra job openings could fix. Hoping that raising tariffs could help American business Hoover created the Hawley-Smoot Tarrif. This actually worsened economy and caused lower export rates. Roosevelt and Hoover The Great Depression drastically changed America's definition of liberalism. Prior to the onset of the depression, in the roaring twenties, policies of laissez-faire were considered liberal, radical, revolutionary, and even democratic. This was due to the fact that revolution was a horrifying notion and not until after the laissez-faire and the free market system failed in the 1920's do people begin to look for alternatives. The time when people started to seek alternatives was at the onset of the depression when America's political views drastically changed.
Some say that the great depression was caused partially by social democracy and planned economies. And although this could be true, it originally started from debts from World War I, and of course the stock market crashing in 1929.
President Hoover tried to fix what the Great Depression has caused but he was not extremely successful. Hoover had only been in office for seven months when the stock market crashed; he believed in a limited a role for government and worried that excessive federal intervention posed a threat to capitalism and individualism (“Herbert Hoover”). Hoover tried a variety of measures he adjusted taxes, asked industries not to cut wages, and pushed for public works projects, but as the depression deepened people began to blame Hoover. They even made shantytowns that were called “Hoovervilles” (“The Great Depression” Gale). President Hoover quickly became the nation’s scapegoat for the severe economic crisis that followed the stock market crash (“The New Deal”). A few of Hoover’s programs that he introduced became key components of later relief efforts (“Herbert Hoover”). Franklin Delano Roosevelt soon was elected and became the president; he came up with the New Deal that was a major key in the conclusion of The Great Depression. Franklin D. The Great Depression was one of the most important historical events that has happened within the last century that impacted every Americans life one way or another. There were many factors that could be an explanation of why The Great Depression happened, but there is no one definitive list of the reasons of what caused The Great Depression. It was a mixture of events in the United States and outside of it that probably led to this period of time to happen. The main reason that everyone could agree on was the event of the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Because of The Crash, it made people go on a bank run which made thousands of banks to close because they simply did not have all the money for all the people wanting to withdraw their savings. Because everyone was trying to take their savings out, most people were turned down by the bank and essentially lost of their savings in the bank. The banks were failing and because they had no more money left, this stopped the banks from having available credit for people to use which made matters even worse for the people. This leads people to poverty and were left with nothing. Because people were poor and were scared of spending their money now, it made people stop buying extra things that weren't essential to live. This was the cause of the unemployment rates during this time period because if no one was buying anything, then there was no reason to keep extra workers for things people are not buying.
The causes of the Great Depression of the 1920's and 1930's has been argued about for generations. Most people agree on several key topics and that it was the severity and length of time the Depression lasted that was actually the most remarkable.
