The great depression was one of the more well-known events of United States history. The cause of the great depression was the stock market crash on Black Tuesday in October of 1929. This was the worse market crash to date and it took a large toll on the American people. Hoover tried to convince the people that the crash would be brief and that they would be back to normal. This was not the case. Instead, Hoover drove the average tariff rate to almost six percent. He had many federal aids at his disposal but he refused to give them to the people.
