How many times have you cheated in school? Was it on one of your peer’s papers? Did you really deserve that A you got? I wish the answer to that first question was a no from everyone, but honesty most people have cheated in school at least one time. A lot of high schools, colleges and universities tend to install an honor code to prevent this. An honor code is a set of ideals that were placed to promote honor and integrity throughout students as well as spread awareness of the consequences of violating these rules. So why is an honor code told to be important to a school? Codes that promote integrity are what everyone wants. One high school, Lawrence Academy, had a discussion of issuing an honor code within the school. Most concluded that “we need an environment where students and faculty could live in complete trust of one another” (Source B). The only way this school could have trust was through this system. Trust and integrity is needed throughout a school to strive and keep improving as a school and as a student. Trust shows confidence in one another and that they are reliable. The code would help push this trust by enforcing honesty throughout the school with thorough rules and consequences. Another incident of mistrust was at the University of Virginia, Professor Lou Bloomfield. He was concerned with plagiarism when a student confided in him that she had copied a paper. When he decided to look into more papers, more and more plagiarized papers continuously popped up (Source D). This shows that without a strict honor code, people will steal writing of other students.
