Theme Essay Throughout the book a constant theme is the boy's dreams and goals. Homer Jr’s main goal in life becomes to build rockets for the government, after seeing the Soviet Union launch a satellite called the Sputnik. Homer Jr was so inspired that he started “Big Creek Missile Academy” with his friends for them to build rockets including Roy Lee, Sherman, and O’Dell. Although the Homer Jr was told from his Father not to build anymore rockets due to the burning down of his office at the mine, he still built rockets. Rocketboys demonstrates dreams and goals through hope, encouragement, and admiration. Rocket Boys exhibits hope because that’s all the boys can do is have faith and hope that they’ll be able to build the rocket of their dreams. Although Homer Sr didn’t want his son working on rockets anymore, he caved and realized the true passion and talent his son had for building rockets so he eventually came around with it. In Chapter 24 Homer Jr says, “You did really good, Dad,” I told him as a spasm of deep, oily coughs racked his body. “Nobody ever launched a better rocket than you.” That quote reveals how much Homer looks up to his father, giving him inspiration to be the best he can me. Although he doesn’t want to work in a mine like his father, he does look up to him, and to see his father being interested in something he was, really made him feel good. Not only did Homer look up to his father, but he also looked up to Dr. Wernher von Braun who built satellites for the government. I think that the boys having inspiration, and someone to admire, it will help them stay on track with their dream. Overall, Rocket Boys had a constant repeat of the boy's dreams and goals. I think these dreams and goals were very important to the boys, and hope, encouragement, and admiration helped the boys reach their
