Holden Caulfield Symbolism

433 Words1 Page

Holden is terrified to grow up and leave his childhood behind, and this becomes a dominating theme in the novel. There are many symbols that contribute to his desire to protect his childhood innocence and avoid change, such as the ducks in the lagoon in Central Park, the Museum of Natural History, and the carousel. One of the major portrayals of this theme comes from the name of the novel. When Holden heard a little boy walking in the street in New York singing, “If a body catch a body coming through the rye,” and he continues to ruminate with this line for the rest of the novel. Holden later tells Phoebe that his only real aspiration in life is to be the catcher in the rye, preventing kids from “falling over the edge of a cliff” into adulthood.
