The study of forensic psychology has been a growing field in psychology for the past few years. With this form of psychology is it is bridging the gap between psychology and criminal justice. “Forensic psychology has been defined ‘as that branch of applied psychology which is concerned with the collection, examination and presentation of evidence for judicial purposes” (Gisil H. Gudjonsonn). Forensic psychology make it so that the criminals will be tested to make sure that they were not mentally disturbed at the time of the crime. Although this was not the first time that a psychologist was used as a witness it was the first time that psychologist was used to help confirm the mental stability during the crime.(Weiner, I. B., & Hess, A. K. ) In this case the psychologist findings was not used to make a final verdict of the driver. Another important case that came about in the field of forensic psychology was Frye vs. The United states 1923.(Weiner, I. B., & Hess, A. K. ) In this case it set the standard of the acceptance of forensic psychologist in the court room. This case was a huge push forward in the field of psychology. The first case that the defendant was founded guilty by reason of insanity was People vs. Hawthorne 1940. In this case it a man murdered his wife and the courts would not allow a psychologist with a PHD to be the expert witness. This trail went on to the supreme court and they passed a role stating that a person should not be based on whether or not the person had a PHD. One of the last court cases that help the field of forensic psychology expand was Jenkins Vs United States 1962. In the courts of D.C they ruled that psychologist are able to be an expert witness when a mental illness are concerned. Forensic profiling is the attempt to do just that. An investigator tries to discern information about the killer based on the information at the crime scene, deducing information about the cause from the effect. This is not an exact science, and has been often likened to an art. It is the goal of this work to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the function and application of forensic psychology, as well as an explication of some of its strengths and weaknesses.

If we studied through the history of criminal theory, spiritual and natural theories are taken as major theories of causation of crime. During medieval period, spiritual explanations were taken as punishment given by god for doing wrong things and any natural disasters like flood, fires, etc were evaluated as curse of high power. The professional role of a forensic psychologist I am interested in is working as a prison psychologist. The reason it interests me is because prison psychologists are a big part in the function of today’s society. The prison psychologist play an important role in the rehabilitation with those who we would call the common criminal as well as working with criminals who are clinically insane. The topic I find such fascinating is Forensic Science and how forensic science has significantly changed over the years. “The area of forensic science has grown considerably over the last 150 years and more so since the mid 1980’s.” (Lyman, 2016) Forensic science has gone from taking basic information, and fingerprints to DNA and blood splatter. During a crime scene investigation evidence is collected, analyzed in a crime laboratory and then if needed are presented to the court. However, today the crime laboratory is becoming mobile and can go to the scene to analyze the evidence. Each crime scene and investigation is unique and distinctive, with the help of forensics it can help solve a case.
Forensic investigations require skills of specially trained scientists, police, engineers, doctors and others. “These investigators observe all types of evidence, from weapons to bloodstains and from computers to bugs” (Erzinclioglu 5). The greater the evidence against a person, the greater the chance of conviction.
