History and memory will be ingrain in people mind, if that topic or story affect directly to them. Sometimes, people cannot remember anything about their past because they are deeply melancholy or shock with it, so they do not want to remember it anymore. As both characters in the stories; one character cannot forget his past, even though it passes for several years. Another character cannot remember his past at all. Power of memory is influence to us in the past, present and also future. In The Remains of The Day, Mr. Stevens mentions the past almost entire story, it shows that he still stuck with the past. If we talk about history, it always relates to Lord Darlington, he who has a power to change history. In the past, Lord Darlington has sympathy to Germany because of the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles. Stevens thinks of his past about Miss Kenton a lot. She used to be a former housekeeper at Darlington Hall and then quit her job to get married. Mr. Stevens reads Miss Kenton’s letter for several time, he cannot deny that he misses her. The time when Miss Kenton and Mr. Stevens still works at Darlington Hall together, there are many moments that make Stevens feels regret for missing the chances that Kenton gives him. In the past, when Miss Kenton realizes that she loves Stevens, but Stevens tries to act nothing. She tells Stevens that Mr. Benn is proposal her and she accepts it. She expects some reaction from him, but he congratulations to her. In fact Mr. Stevens also loves her, but he unacceptable to let private feelings decreasing his professional. A few weeks later, Miss Kenton’s aunt is passed away and she cries so hard in her room. Stevens wants to console her, but he afraids to interrupt her private grief.
