History and memory will be ingrain in people mind, if that topic or story affect directly to them. Sometimes, people cannot remember anything about their past because they are deeply melancholy or shock with it, so they do not want to remember it anymore. As both characters in the stories; one character cannot forget his past, even though it passes for several years. Another character cannot remember his past at all. Power of memory is influence to us in the past, present and also future. In The Remains of The Day, Mr. Stevens mentions the past almost entire story, it shows that he still stuck with the past. If we talk about history, it always relates to Lord Darlington, he who has a power to change history. Stevens thinks of his past about Miss Kenton a lot. She used to be a former housekeeper at Darlington Hall and then quit her job to get married. Mr. Stevens reads Miss Kenton’s letter for several time, he cannot deny that he misses her. The past dictates who we are in a current moment, and affects who we might become in the future. Every decision people make in lives has an influence on future, regardless of how minimal or large it is. Some decisions people decide to make can have dire consequences that will follow them for the rest of the life. Moreover, even though if someone would want to leave any memories from past behind, however it will always be by his side. Throughout the story, however, as Jack gradually opens his eyes to the realities of his own nature and his world, he realizes that the human race cannot forget the past and survive. Man must not only remember, but also embrace the past, because it teaches him the truth about himself and enables him to face the future.

One example can be Gabriel, there are many parts in the story when Gabriel is used to show memories, One example is, " Now he became aware of an entirely new sensation: pinpricks? No, because they were soft and without pain. Tiny, cold, featherlike feelings peppered his body and face. He put out his tongue again, and caught one of the dots of cold upon it. It disappeared from his awareness instantly; but he caught another, and another. The sensation made him smile,”(Chapter 11, pg. 80 Lowery) . This was when Gabriel was crying, and then Jonas had went to Gabe’s room. When whent he realized maybe that he could send the memory to Gabe of the happy elephant. And so he did. This shows the memory is so strong it can calm people and have wonders.
As I have been reading memoirs about memory for this class, each essay made me recall or even examine my past memory closely. However, the more minutely I tried to recall what happened in the past, the more confused I got because I could not see the clear image and believe I get lost in my own memory, which I thought, I have preserved perfectly in my brain. The loss of the details in each memory has made me a little bit sentimental, feeling like losing something important in my life. But, upon reading those essays, I came to realize that remembering correct the past is not as important as growing up within memory.
