“‘They look like white elephants,’ she said.”(Hemingway 228). Communication is a big factor in life, especially for people who want to maintain a certain relationship. The work of Ernest Hemingway, “Hills Like White Elephants”, displays the importance of communication and comprehension with the partner you are communicating with. This short story, “Hills Like White Elephants”, is about a man and his girlfriend, Jig, trying to find a resolution, for their quarrel about abortion. They have a long conversion to come to an understanding, but they are unable to do this due to their persistence of staying in their side of the argument, At the end of this story, Jig is able to come to a conclusion about her choice, which becomes the cliffhanger …show more content…

Jig and the man have two different types of solutions about their conflict. Jig believes that it is best to settle down, but the man believes that they should continue going on adventures. Due to their different beliefs, these characters try to manipulate the opposing character, so they can come to a solution. In the story, the man says, “I have known lots of people that have done it... if you don’t want to you don’t have to… But I know it’s perfectly simple” (Hemingway 230). These words that the man is saying is a way to manipulate Jig to his side of this conflict. He is currently trying to convey that Jig should do abortion so they can continue to be happy. When he says “if you don’t want to you don’t have to”, he is showing that he is in Jig’s side even though he is not (Hemingway 230). Continuing he also says “but i know it’s perfectly simple.” (Hemingway 230). At this time, abortion was illegal, by lying to her, he shows proof of his manipulation. Jig also uses manipulation by saying. “I don’t care about me…And I’ll do it and then everything will be fine.” (Hemingway 230). By saying these words, Jig is trying to make the man feel bad for the choices that he is trying to force her to
