The Unsung Hero of my Life
What is the first thing you think of when I ask you who your hero is? Do you think of Batman or Superman? What about a real life hero? My hero is seemingly insignificant to most, not famous, and certainly not Superman. But my brother Jackson is my hero not because of his strength, but because of his love for life, his ability to be supportive, and for his strong morals.
He is my hero because of his love for life. An example of this is his positive attitude. In any situation, he is positive, not letting the hard moment bring him down, and always loving what he is doing, learning and growing from it. When he was asking permission from his girlfriend’s father to marry her, her parents were on a cruise. It was supposed to be $8 a minute to call the cruise ship. It ended up being $80 a minute, and he was still not able to reach her dad. But, instead of being mad about it, he just moved on. Who would imagine, George C. Wallace an American hero. Strong, courageous, noble and thoughtful are a few words used to describe a hero. Merriam-Webster (2014) dictionary defines a hero as a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. Among several historical and controversial leaders, George Wallace and Gilgamesh are considered great heroes. However through their individual journeys they both learned how to humble themselves for the greater good of their society.
What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.

A person that has earned the title of veteran is an American Hero, simple as that. The top three qualities that stand out to me when reflecting on veterans are selflessness, courage, and commitment. I come from a long line of military veterans on all sides of my family. Writing this essay is very easy when I think about those family members. However, the most important point of this essay is to address how ALL Americans should recognize our veterans as being our real life super heroes. What they do for us as civilians is, in my opinion, the definition of heroism. Veterans don’t stop giving of themselves when their service is done. The AMVETS and other veteran organizations continue to give back by volunteering, helping those in need, and of course, providing scholarship opportunities like this one.
Assignment details: Analyze the components of the hero’s journey. Basically, support the argument that Jaws follows the epic hero cycle. Name specific examples from the movie and connect them to the hero’s journey. However, this is not a plot summary. You are not retelling the story, but selecting examples to support the analysis.
Heroism. Heroism is “heroic conduct” or “courageous action”(“Heroism”). People throughout America’s history, and the world’s history, for more than hundreds of years, have satisfied the standards of heroism, rising above and doing what is right. Heroism doesn’t have to mean saving somebody’s life. To be a hero, one does not need a cape or a villain to fight. Exhibiting acts of heroism can be as small helping retrieve a cat from a tree or as large as helping put out the fire of a burning building. Whether one’s acts of heroism are miniscule or major, they occur every day by ordinary people, proving their extraordinary abilities. After World War II ended, many acts of heroism were displayed that are still remembered today, specifically involving Operation Little Vittles. Over two million citizens living in West Berlin were doomed, cut off from the outside world by the Russians, praying for a miracle. Their wish came true when a handful of pilots agreed to drop thousands of tons of food and fuel from the air in Berlin. One of these esteemed pilots goes by the name of Gail Halvorsen, who changed the situation of the Russian blockade for the better. Halvorsen made the daring decision to drop thousands of individual packages of candy to all of the sweet deprived citizens of West Berlin. Pilot Gail Halvorsen contributed a daring effort by flying day in and day out dropping candy all with the hopes of trying to improve the awful conditions for those involved in the blockade, putting smiles on people’s faces and living up to the standards of heroism.
Stephen Richards once said, “When you do what you fear most, then you can do anything.” Joseph Campbell has written a three stage theory that every hero in a story goes through, a journey if you will. Every journey is different, but it's always structured around his formula, a hero will: separate from his/her known world into a new one, they'll challenge opposing forces or complete a series of tests, and lastly they return to their world again with a gift. Going along with this formula I've gone through my own hero's journey, and succeeded.
We all have them, men and women we know who have served in the military. They are people we admire, look up to, and respect for the sacrifices they made and their courage in the face of adversity on and off the battlefield. For hundreds of years, our military troops have sacrificed their lives for America’s freedom. They have never stopped giving of themselves day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. Whether it’s on the grounds of Iraq or the mountains in Afghanistan, people are fighting for our freedom. Adam Koopmann, Military Police Officer, has consistently achieved these accomplishments on a daily basis in order to fight for our country. He has improved the lives of hundreds of people making him a hero.
Upon hearing that this topic was about heroes, my mind became flooded with ideas and concepts. Family members, historical figures and celebrities had all come to mind. However, this person was the first name that came to mind. This man, depending on your prospective, is either a hero or a villain. To many, he and his qualities are basically the definition of a hero. He has a no-quit attitude, a passion, and a fire in his heart. He has the heart and soul of a true warrior and champion. He has never run, he has fought through the down times, the lows, to achieve greatness, and reach those highs, those great moments. Che was a hero. Many people debate whether or not Che was a hero or villain, but it seems to come down to more people viewing him as a hero. Yes, before Che left to Cuba, he had a very rough background of jail time and criminal charges. Yet he did many outstanding acts, making him appear to be a caring-respectful hero. Che became a doctor at an early age and already was on the track of being a hero by saving and taking care of many people’s lives. Being a doctor is a hard job because you have someone’s life in your own hands and if you mess up or don’t take plenty of care of them, you will be the reason they died, so Che was already stepping out of many peoples comfort zones and risking himself already early on. The definition of a hero is different, based on everybody’s personal experience and life choices. However, there is a basic thought process when it comes to what most people want, such as loyalty, compassion, charisma, fun-loving and many more. While many people share these characteristics, why we pick people as our heroes is how they present these traits. My current hero, as of just recently, is an actor named Jared Padalecki. Jared plays the tallest brother in the fantasy, horror TV show known as Supernatural.
The earth is huge with all different kinds of everyday heroes. These heroes are all doing different things to help others all over the world. My Michigan hero helps me through stuff and always believes in me. She always helps me up when I'm down. She never gives up on me and always tells me that I can do stuff, even when I'm doubting myself. She walks me through tough times and convinces me to stay strong. When I was a wee child, I always remembered watching reality, singing shows like American Idol and X-Factor and wondering if one day, could I ever possibly meet these celebrities or singers? Heretofore, who would have ever to predict that I met a renowned singer on American idol sooner than imagined? This miraculous moment occurred during the summer of 2016 when I was shopping at Target. For a few months before June, my father planned a summer, camping trip for my family to travel along with other families in our catholic church community. All of the members in my family, which includes my father and younger sister, who was going for this 3 day camp-out trip packed and organized everything but me. Therefore, I must gather some last-minute items like the usual late bird I am.
When asked who their hero is, most people respond with the name of an athlete or an actress/actor. When asked who my hero is I would have to respond with a simple three letter word: mom. My mother has been the greatest inspiration in my life and is the main reason that I am where I am and who I am today.
