Data Analysis
Human hearts are amazing and the most important organ in the body, because of pumping blood to all parts of the body all day. When hearts pump, hearts beat a certain amount each minute. The question for this particular experiment is, “Does different genres of music affect the heart rate of a person?” Hypothesis’ of an experiment is extremely important. A hypothesis says what the scientist predicts will happen during an experiment. In this experiment, the hypothesis is, “If the person listens to rap, than the person’s heart rate will increase more than other genres of music.” Numerous variables in experiments make a project a true scientific experiment. For the independent variable, the variable was the genre of music played for …show more content…

Subjects 1, 14, and 7 participated in the pop music experimental group for the project. A trend in the data for the pop group was negative. All subjects had a higher resting heart rate than the heart after the song had finished. Subject 1 had a resting heart rate of 113 BPM (Beats per minute) and ended with a heart rate of 110 BPM. Subject 14 had a resting heart rate of 95 BPM and after the song finished, their heart rate became 86 BPM. Subject 7’s heart rate dropped about the same amount as Subject 1 with a resting heart rate of 84 BPM and an ending heart rate of 81 BPM. For the pop group, the subjects listened to “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction. Overall, there was a negative trend, meaning all heart rates went down in beats per minute. In the rap experimental group, the participants’ heart rate raised the most out of all experimental groups. Subject 5 had a resting heart rate of 89 BPM and an ending heart rate of 93 BPM. Subject 9 had a heart rate of 97 BPM before listening to music and 102 BPM after listening to the rap song. Subject 15’s heart rate did not change from resting heart rate and to after the song with 93 BPM. Sucker for Pain by Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Logic, and Ty Dolla $ign became the song for the rap group to listen to with headphones. The jazz experimental group listened to Cabaret by Louis Armstrong. Two of the three …show more content…

Written in background research, the normal heart rate is around 60 BPM. However, most subjects were either in the range of 80-90 BPM. Some subjects’ heart rates increases to a 100+ BPM range. Some tools used in the experiment may have had a possible effect on the outcome of the project. For example, using the heart rate watch could have resulted in elevated heart rate due to holding down a button to find the beats per minute as opposed to having something on you already taking the measurement. When testing humans, there are lots of extraneous variables. For example, Subject 11 before taking the experiment, said they had a cold and was still sick. Other participants had siblings in the room of the experiment, or just other people were around. People may have walked or ridden a bike to the experiment, resulting in an elevated heart rate. Several items could have resulted in different results. In all, the data shows that the hypothesis of the rap music increasing heart more than other genres of music was accepted and
