Moving into the Future
Working towards my healthcare care administration degree is just one of my goals that will assist me in achieving my ultimate goal of owning and operating my on nursing home. I have set a common personal goal for myself, to overcome my finical challenges. I will elaborate on how the above goals relate to the SMART goal process, set a plan to conquer any stumbling blocks and finally how it is all linked to my success as an online student. With the collaboration of Ashford University and my support of my family, I will achieve success in all my goals.

As previously stated my personal goal is to overcome my financial challenges, I plan to review my credit report my frequently and set up payment reminders to ensure that I me all bills on or before their due dates. I’m working towards my academic goal of completing my Bachelors of Arts in Health Care Administration and eventually pursuing and completing my Masters of Arts in Health Care Administration. I’ve taking online classes before but tried to take on to much at one time. This time I have decided to take one class at a time, being a full time student is challenging enough but add full time employee and parent on top of that and it’s extremely stressful. Baby steps towards my goals will be a long road but will have a greater payoff in the end. My ultimate professional goal is to own and operate a nursing home. I have already began working on all of my goals, by taking the appropriate actions to achieve success.
The United States is projected to spend nearly 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product on healthcare by 2020.According to a Mckinsey study $447 billion of the 1.7 trillion the U.S. spent on healthcare in 2003 was in excess of what it should have spent based on its wealth. A 1 % increase in the rate of health-spending results in an increase of about $2 trillion in spending on health over the next 10 years.
Born and raised by parents working in the medical field, I have always had the urge to follow up on on a health related career. Despite never being pressured into choosing scientific subjects as my academic studies, I deeply admired what a long way science has come and longed to give my contribution to this fascinating world. I am presently studying for my A-levels at St.Aloysius Sixth form in Malta, a college for high achievers.

I have had the opportunity to care for wonderful individuals, each of whom have contributed the fabric of my personal nursing career. Nursing is a profession of both joy and sadness combined. My career has provided me the opportunity to care for those I need. In retrospect I can say that my personal nursing tapestry is comprised of patients who were grateful to a care team, after being revived from suffering a sudden cardiac event, the smile of a trusting child, a hand to be held while working with hospice patients and their families. My current role is a case manager. I seldom have direct contact with patients who have chronic illnesses, yet I am gifted with their trust. I have been given an opportunity to support, care, respect, educate, collaborate and research practice improvement initiatives. I continue to formulate my own nursing philosophy daily. While I experience daily encounters that allow my tapestry to become more colorful and detailed, I allow myself to set new goals. My final nursing goal, is to become a nurse practitioner. I can see myself in the next year working in an academic capacity in becoming a leader in rural health improvement and proficient at educating patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions, speaking at national events, advocating for patients and playing an active role in health policy. The role of a Healthcare Administrator is very important whether it be an administrator in a clinical setting, hospital setting, or long term care setting. All of these settings require the same main skills in the position of the person fulfilling the role as Healthcare Administrator; those skills are communication and relationship management, leadership, professionalism, knowledge of the healthcare environment, and business skills. If any one of these skills is missing, this person could be doing a disservice to the organization they are a member of.
Healthcare plays an important role in almost every person’s life at one point or another. Many times, one can get caught without, or underinsured and it can be detrimental to their livelihood. With the rising cost of healthcare, it is likely that having a national healthcare policy in place, and as an individual, being able to afford and obtain adequate health insurance has not been required until now. With the new national healthcare plan, it is required for all citizens to obtain and maintain some sort of public or private insurance policy. The rising costs can be attributed to many things. A significant reason for the astronomical cost of health care is because of the staggering amount of uninsured or underinsured individuals receiving medical attention and almost many never paying the bill. Those who do have insurance have seen a gradual increase in their premiums and deductibles to make up for this.
People need to think intelligently and set goals that are specific to their needs, making it possible to achieve their goals by making sure they are measurable and realistic and making it possible to build a support system around them; furthermore, they also need to set a deadline with time frames that can be met. Chanika Charles stated that “young people are at risk of being gobbled up by despair, overcome by conditions beyond their control” (A17). To avoid this, people need to start motivating themselves and getting excited about what they want to achieve, making sure their goals are relevant to their needs and being more perseverance when situations become difficult. When setting up their goals, they must ask that magic question: is this relevant to my lifestyle, furthermore, what will I do to achieve it?
My career goal at this point of my life is that I want complete my Associates Degree in Human Services while maintaining a full time employment at well know urban medical facility that is constantly busy environment. My factor that influenced me to switch my intended degree is that I truly love the type of work I currently as a Certified Nursing Assistant. There are the positives in this job field and well as the negatives.
When I hear professional goals the first thing that comes to mind is the purpose of choosing the nursing profession and what I want to achieve. This profession has been my passion and I decided to advance my education to be able to function in a higher capacity, mostly helping the underserved population. Considering that nurses job description comprises of total nursing care at the bedside and providing quality care, but an advanced nurse practitioner acquired a higher knowledge and provide care that helps with disease prevention and health promotion. Nursing involves alleviating suffering by doing a diagnosis and treatment of human response, preventing illness and injury to individuals, populations and communities. The professional growth in the provision of patient care depends on setting goals that contribute to development of the career and skill enhancement as the caregiver. Goals in the nursing profession can be short term or long term. Short term goals are those that are achievable in a short time frame and more immediate as they take one to two years. They help in reaching long term goals.
The Future is Now Charles Kettering at a point in his life is quoted to have said, “We must look forward to the future as that is where most of us will be spending the rest of our lives.” This statement is one that used to frighten me, but now reading the sentence, I realize this is an opportunity. The possibilities of anyone’s future are endless. When searching ten years into these possibilities, nothing is going to be exact, but by looking at the past we can predict the future. Attending a public school and living with my parents has taken up much of my life, as it is with most students.
Introduction Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse. Nursing wasn’t just about making money for me it was much more than that. Nursing was something I was very passionate about. I wanted to save lives and help people get back on their feet.
Completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) has been one of my goals after I graduated from my Associate Degree in Nursing, and I said one of my goals because my ultimate goal is to become an Advance Practice Registered Nurse. It is the first time I am taking classes online and all my efforts will be in turn this journey into a positive experience to achieve my goals. Health care has always been an interesting topic all over the world. Voltaire once said, “The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” It may seem like health care that nothing gets accomplished in different health care systems, but ultimately many trying to cures diseases and improve health care systems.
The real problem with the health care system in this country is not just the people running it but mainly the massive pit of debt it is continually digging. America spends around 17%, which is about $2.5 trillion of our GDP on health care alone! It is safe to say we spend nearly more than any other country out there. Where is all of this money going though, are they just giving it away to those in need of free medicine or people who cant pay there doctors bills? Most of the money spent is on regulations, research on medicines and failures of medicines that may have not made the “cut” to be on the market.
