Football is more than just a game. It is a lifestyle. I joined my high school football team as a freshman and continued to play until I sustained an injury to my knee during my sophomore year. Ever sense I played the game I found the history of football very interesting. Sense its conception in the 1820’s, football has been a source of entertainment and physical competition. From the iron grid to the modern turf field, football has taught young men key values and responsibilities. It has had a profound affect on advertising and even television itself. It is also played in almost every university to this day. To me football is more of a mental sport than physical. Balloon was similar to rugby. Despite being created by universities, it was subsequently banned from all campuses in the early 1860’s after it was deemed too violent. By the late 1860’s, after several new regulations and advancements the game found its way back on several major universities around the country. However it was not until the 1870’s that representatives from divergent universities got together and wrote down a unified set of intercollegiate rules. In the late 1880’s Princeton players introduced the modern football snap, forever separating american football from rugby. Some other major rule changes of this time period include, the reduction of field size to 110 yards and the adoption of modern scoring techniques.
