"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties.” (Hamlet) A man is admirable and even is portrayed as god-like. The character Hamlet, amazingly created by William Shakespeare, has several different characteristics to his personality. [Thesis] The three primary sides to Hamlet are the avenger, the actor, and the indecisive man. [Preview] To begin, the character Hamlet is seen as an avenger. [D1 Inform] He desperately seeks revenge for the murder of his father. Claudius murders his own brother so he can inherit the throne and marry Gertrude therefore Hamlet wants to avenge his father’s death by killing Claudius. [E1 Descriptive Fact] Shakespeare keeps the play interesting by creating this tension between the main characters. [D2 Inform] Hamlet knows Claudius killed his father by pouring poison in his ear. [E2 Fact] Hamlet shows Claudius he knows that he is the murderer of his father when he puts on the play that simulates the murder. Shakespeare is showing that Hamlet is an avenger by means of Hamlet making Claudius suffer as he wonders what is going on. [D3 Paraphrase] Hamlet finally does kill Claudius after a long while of contemplating. [D2 Paraphrase] Hamlet feigns acts of madness to whitewash and confuse the king. [E2 Real Life Sit] This leads to the king thinking that Hamlet is physically going crazy after the death of his father. [D3 Cause and Effect] For example, Hamlet enters into a psychotic rage and kills Polonius not even knowing who was actually behind the curtain he stabbed through. [E3 State] This again is William Shakespeare’s way of making this play thought provoking and he does a great job of it. [D4
