Gustave Dore’s Inferno
Gustave Dore was one of the most famous Illustrators of his time. Dore Illustrated many works by famous authors and brought their stories back to life. His most famous illustration was the Dante’s Inferno story. His pictures told the story just as well as what was written in the story. Gustave Dore illustrations gave a more in depth view into the stories that he illustrated.
The life of Gustave Dore was one filled with art. He was born in Strasbourg France on January 6th 1833. When he turned fifteen Dore moved to Paris where he started to show signs that he was good with art. By 1855 Dore was planning to start on illustrations for the “Inferno”. The reason why Dore decided to do this was because of the publics renewed entrance in Dante’s “Inferno.” Gustave Dore made his illustrations by using the old vignette woodblock method. There are ten steps to creating a print for each picture. Step one is to draw the picture that the person want to use then carve it on to the wood block. Step two is to get the print paper and cut it to the size of the block. Step three is to wet the paper and set it out to dry. Step four is to use a paint roller and put ink all over it. Step five is to use the paint roller with ink all over it and use it on the wood block. Step six is to go back to the wet paper and clean up any water that is sitting on it, so that is damp. Step seven is to take the woodblock with ink and put it on the wet paper and put pressure on it. Step eight is to carefully flip the paper over so that the woodblock is on the bottom and the paper is on the top. Step nine is to rub the woodblock and paper together with a baren. The last step is to slowly peel the paper away from the woodblock. Dore did the “inferno” with his own money because his publisher was cautious with his project.
