In present day America, there are many problems facing our society. Among these problems, violence is very important. Violence is a conflict that also affects other countries, whether they are developed or not. A huge factor that plays a role in America is the ownership and usage of guns by civilians. In modern day politics, one point that is heavily debated is how the level of gun violence could be reduced. In the United States, there are things the federal government, state and local governments, community groups and individuals could do to reduce the level of gun violence. First of all, at the federal level, there are laws regulating gun ownership. For example, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1994 imposed, on an interim basis, a five-day waiting period and background check before a licensed gun importer, manufacturer or dealer can sell or deliver a handgun to an unlicensed individual (Gettings and McNiff). To decrease gun violence, the federal government could pass more laws for stricter background checks so that guns do not get into the wrong hands. On the state level, laws vary from state to state. For example, in Texas the laws are not very strict and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence rated their safety an “F”. To reduce gun violence, states could try to regulate all of their laws compared to the other states and improve their rating if it's low like Texas. Lastly, to reduce gun violence, community groups could get together to educate each other on how to solve problems without violence and how to properly use guns. Compared to other industrialized countries, America has a high violence rate, which guns plays a part in. Even though the rate of gun violence in America is decreasing, it is still a prevalent problem that needs to be fixed.
